Judge in Miami Rules Florida Ban on Gay Adoption Unconstitutional

U.S. News & World Report - By Amanda Ruggeri - Nov. 25 (News Report) - A 1977 Florida state law that bans gay individuals from adopting has received its biggest challenge thus far: Foster father Frank Martin Gill won his suit to adopt two brothers he has been fostering since 2004. In her decision this morning, Miami Dade Circuit Judge Cindy Lederman ruled that there was no "rational basis" to prevent the children from being adopted. The case, which marks the first time that a gay adoption case has been taken before a trial court in Florida, seems likely to go before the Florida Supreme Court, which could overturn the ban.

U.S. News & World Report - By Michael Barone - Oct. 27 (Opinion) - High-income, high-education voters in the suburbs of big metro areas, my hypothesis goes, are preoccupied with long-term wealth accumulation—and react sharply against the Republican Party when their wealth is suddenly sharply diminished when there is a Republican president. Modest-income, modest-education voters in less affluent surroundings, it seems judging from McCain's relatively good showing in Pennsylvania outside the heavily populated southeast, react much less sharply, because they have never expected to accumulate all that much in the way of wealth anyhow, consider themselves reasonably well protected by the existing safety net and feel free to vote (as more affluent Philly suburbanites have done in better times) on the basis of their opinions (conservative in their case) on cultural issues. The affluent are less afraid of the tax increases that Obama promises them than they are shocked by the negative effect on their wealth from the collapse of the housing bubble and the sharp decline in stock prices.

The news media are trying to keep careful count of the superdelegates' preferences. Which leads me to ask this question: How would you like to be the superdelegate who casts, or is presented by the media as casting, the decisive vote? The vote that will determine whether Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee. The vote that will determine whether you are overriding the delegates elected by the people or whether you are overriding the people who have cast the votes. These numbers may overstate the Democratic advantage. They measure all adults rather than just voters, and Pew's numbers in 2004 and 2006 were more Democratic than the exit polls. Still, the trend is clear.

U.S. News & World Report - By Marianne Lavelle, Schulte - Feb. 04 (Special Report) - Washington loves a "win-win," but there are plenty of doubts as to whether the love affair with ethanol qualifies. Even though the ethanol industry profited handsomely last year, it continued to benefit from billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies. And as ethanol becomes a larger part of the energy mix, it is not clear that Washington is prepared for the fallout. Ethanol already consumes so much corn that signs of strain on the food supply and prices are rippling across the marketplace. Environmental impacts will multiply as more land and water are devoted to the prized yellow grain. And, even if these problems were overcome, ethanol's potential growth could be stunted by an energy system currently tailored to gasoline. Ethanol undoubtedly plays a role in the quest for energy independence and the desire to curb global warming. But some observers worry that ethanol development may take the place of more effective initiatives: forcing automakers to increase gas mileage, for instance, or mandating cuts in carbon dioxide emissions. "Some members of Congress are looking for quick fixes," says one economist who has studied the issue. "It's an easy bandwagon to jump on. But there's a lot of exaggeration about what ethanol is capable of doing."

U.S. News & World Report - By Marianne Lavelle - Oct. 01 (Special Report) - When Andy Frank first tried to demonstrate how electricity could help a car get 100 miles per gallon of gasoline, he resorted to the only big power source he could find, the lead acid battery from a Caterpillar tractor. But the farm vehicle-to-auto transplant didn't work, and the young professor concluded the battery technology of 1972 wasn't up to the job. Still, he didn't give up. "This is fundamental engineering," he says. "If you do the physics and calculations, and have the knowledge of how cars work, you can show on paper it's possible." Thirty-four years later, Frank's dream, known by its cadre of advocates as the "plug-in hybrid electric vehicle," is tantalizingly close to reality. DaimlerChrysler has research vehicles on the road, Toyota this summer became the first car company to announce it was working on a commercial PHEV, and the other automakers-while not making commitments-are no longer scoffing. Big money also is taking notice, with legendary venture capitalist John Doerr calling plug-ins "a really big deal" and the philanthropic arm of Google apparently poised to back research.
