TomPaine - By Dmitri Iglitzin - Jun. 19 (Opinion) - In many ways, the lack of overwhelming support for EFCA is surprising. Under current law, workers who want to form a union must currently undergo a risky, grueling and time-consuming "pre-election" period that culminates, if they're lucky, in an election held under the auspices of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). If they're not lucky, the workers are instead fired or otherwise discriminated against. One recent study, conducted by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, found that about one in five union organizers or activists can expect to be fired during the pre-election period.

Congressional leaders have tacitly or explicitly accepted the necessity of keeping the "military option"--meaning a massive, unprovoked air attack on Iran--"on the table," as have all three of the leading candidates for the party's presidential nomination.

Maliki: Dead Man Walking

TomPaine - By Robert Dreyfuss - Jul. 26 (Opinion) - The address by Iraq's puppet prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday was a surreal and other-worldly exercise in the make-believe. As civil war rages in Iraq, swamping even its capital in an orgy of violence, Maliki strolled into the House chamber, led by an "escort committee" of House and Senate members that resembled pall-bearers more than an honor guard. As they waited for Maliki to enter the room, the assembled dignitaries seemed shrouded in a funereal silence. House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert clumsily mispronounced his name, introducing Maliki as "Malocky." But when he finally started to speak, it was malarkey.

TomPaine - Jun. 26 (Opinion) - Marianne Manilov is a writer living in San Francisco. She is currently working on her first book about the human rights activist, Ka Hsaw Wa. She is a senior consultant with the group We Interrupt This Message. John Stossel is back in action. Stossel is a commentator on ABC's "20/20," where he devotes much of his time to railing against government regulations. According to FreeMarket.net, Stossel is "one of the libertarian movement's most valuable proponents." His staunch libertarian perspective influences much of his commentary, sometimes to the detriment of its accuracy. Last summer, Stossel attacked the organic food industry using fabricated and distorted scientific studies. His fans sprang to his defense, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank, even sponsored a website in his honor, SaveJohnStossel.com. Stossel is now gearing up for another attack on greens, this time in the form of a screed against environmental education. The program is reportedly scheduled to air on Friday, June 29, 2001. According to educators and parents whose children were interviewed for the show, Stossel has once again allowed his beliefs to interfere with his journalistic duties.
