Afghanistan: Former Marine at State Resigns

Taylor Marsh - By Taylor Marsh - Oct. 27 (Opinion) - His name is Matthew Hoh and this could turn into a story that will haunt Pres. Obama’s decision on Afghanistan every day until the strategy is announced. I’m sure it is already. Hoh simply doesn’t believe in where the U.S. mission has been and where Obama is about to take the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. No doubt it will fuel people who want to withdraw, even as I continue to believe from all information I’ve gathered that no more troops is step one, with many complicated issues to address more important than sending in more U.S. soldiers. So, when Hoh says, “But you have to draw the line somewhere, and say this is their problem to solve,” I absolutely agree. But as it now stands, the Afghan women are worse off today than they were when the Taliban reigned. We cannot leave it at that or Afghanistan will be more than a corrupt mess; it will revert to a failed state, because no country can stabilize with the women of that country being gang raped, reduced as property and held under lock and key. After all, it was Carter who authorized the first funding that begat Reagan’s partnership with Zia that begat the mujahadeen that begat William Casey’s obsessions that begat, and on and on, until Bush invaded after 9/11, that became the mess he dropped in Obama’s lap.

Taylor Marsh - Jan. 08 (Opinion) - Democrats support the troops one hundred percent. As for Mr. Bush, not so much, if at all, especially if he's going to send more soldiers to the civil war slaughter. So if the Democratic majority can't stop it from happening, who can? But what exactly can the Democrats do to stop it? Mr. Bush holds the commander in chief card, which is the strongest hold card in the political deck. Now he's trying to sweeten his poison pill with a plan for Iraqi jobs that should have happened over two years ago.

Speaker Pelosi Lays it Down on Iraq

Taylor Marsh - By Taylor Marsh - Jan. 07 (Opinion) - In her first Sunday morning interview, Speaker Nancy Pelosi laid it out plainly on Iraq. ... It's nice to be home and have all my tech toys so that I could catch the Speaker's performance. Let's make sure this YouTube gets around. ... People need to understand that having a woman in charge also means strength, especially on military and foreign affairs. After all, in many households, it's the mommy who gets the discipline done, while the daddy is really the softy! But having Pelosi and the Democrats in charge also means not just talking about what's to be done, but doing the job competently. Putting in troops for "political purposes," as The Bush-McCain doctrine suggests, isn't an answer. That's only a legacy recipe for Mr. Bush, but gets us nowhere. Unless the Iraqis, not the U.S., decide to put together a political solution, adding more U.S. troops just adds to the carnage and the prolonging of military strain currently reaching the breaking point under Bush, with the aid of senators like Graham and McCain and so many others. Speaker Pelosi has it right. Now we need to back it up with actions, which won't be easy, given that the commander in chief is hell bent on escalation. Mr. Bush will announce just such a plan to the nation mid-week. The battle will then begin.

Taylor Marsh - By Taylor Marsh - Oct. 08 (Opinion) - Allen's "macaca" troubles are bad enough, but even those just got worse. However, now something new has broken out. It seems Allen didn't report his stock options. He just doesn't understand the difference between right and wrong. Evidently Allen thinks privilege equals an exemption. On that he's in lock step with George W. Bush. Ryan Lizza, who first filled out the story of Allen's passion for hanging a noose in his office and his love for the Confederate flag, tipped the world to yet two more people who heard Allen use the "n" word.

The subject is saving lives through a suicide hotline. If you've ever known anyone in the throws of deep depression, especially someone who is suicidal, you know that reaching out for help is not easy. Depression brings with it a lot of shame, especially when you're in the throws of the deepest, blackest heart of the illness. Just ask Mike Wallace if you don't think depression is real.

Taylor Marsh - Jun. 20 (Opinion) - Warriors used to know what they were getting into when they joined the U.S. Armed Forces, but they don't anymore. There used to be a time when we wept for those returning in body bags, only because of the loss of life. Now we cry out in anger over the misspent service of men and women who have been put into a far off country and left in limbo because our leaders don't know what they're doing.
