Sydney Morning Herald - By John Garnaut - Nov. 23 (News Report) - North Korea has burnished the leadership credentials of its 26-year-old dictator-in-waiting with a deadly artillery attack on South Korean territory, causing its neighbour to return fire and scramble F-16 fighters. Two South Korean marines died, and at least 12 were wounded. There were reports of civilian injuries and houses were set ablaze as scores of shells fell on Yeonpyeong island.

Sydney Morning Herald - By Deborah Smith - Feb. 19 (Special Report) - MOST southern hemisphere plants - except for weeds - will not be able to adapt to rapid climate change, a study of more than 11,000 species suggests. Researchers, including the Sydney botanist Peter Weston, traced the history of plants that live in a range of different habitats including bogs, alpine regions, rainforests and arid environments. They found the vast majority were still stuck in their old ways. Despite tens of millions of years of evolution, less than 4 per cent of the species had managed to shift to new habitats.

His advisers tallied their remaining time last week and calculated fewer than 300 hours to go. Cardboard cartons are stacked in the West Wing as files are carefully catalogued for the archives. By Friday, the last official work day of the Bush White House, all but the most senior officials will have turned in their government-issued BlackBerrys and badges. This is what Mr Bush is calling the season of "the lasts". But while life inside the White House may be winding down, the legacy-building is gearing up. The White House website features an extensive recitation of Mr Bush's "highlights and accomplishments", including a document titled "One hundred things Americans may not know about the Bush Administration record". First on the list is "Kept America safe".
