Associated Press - By Dina Cappiello - Apr. 28 (News Report) - The nation's top nuclear regulator cast doubt Thursday on whether reactors in the U.S. are prepared for the type of days-long power outage that struck a nuclear power plant in Japan. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has only required plants in this country to cope without power for four to eight hours. After that time, it assumes some electrical power will be restored.

Associated Press - By Suzanne Gamboa - Jan. 15 (News) - The Obama administration says it will allow Haitians already in the U.S. illegally to remain because of this week's catastrophic earthquake. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano granted the temporary protected status on Friday. The protection is only available to Haitians already in the country as of last Tuesday. On Wednesday, Napolitano temporarily halted deportations of Haitians, even those already in detention.

A total of 299 loan originators with criminal records applied for licenses in 2007 when licensing and criminal background checks were first required. They applied even though they knew their fingerprints would be checked by law enforcement and that all felonies and gross misdemeanors involving dishonesty within the previous seven years would disqualify them. Half of them -- 149 -- were denied licenses because of their convictions, and the other half kept their licenses because their convictions were more than seven years old. But that's only temporary

Complaint records show those two federal agencies regularly handled consumer complaints by letting the banks investigate them, without interviewing complainants or the accused themselves, according to documents and interviews with dozens of complainants. The state subpoenaed witnesses, questioned complainants and took scores of enforcement actions, records show.
