Anti-abortion protesters target site of proposed Planned Parenthood clinic in Redwood City

San Jose Mercury News - By Bonnie Eslinger - Feb. 07 (News) - About 35 anti-abortion protesters congregated Friday afternoon in front of a Redwood City building where Planned Parenthood hopes to open a clinic, holding signs including some with graphic images of aborted fetuses. Planned Parenthood's application for a permit to operate a clinic at 2890 El Camino Real drew dozens of supporters and opponents to a hearing last month before the city's zoning administrator. No decision has been made yet. Fran Linkin, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood's regional office, said last month that the women's health care provider has no immediate plans to offer abortions at the clinic, although that could change if it determines the need exists.

Intel and Stanford University to jointly develop 3-D graphics projects

San Jose Mercury News - By Lisa Krieger - Jan. 26 (News) - In an unusual collaboration, Intel and Stanford University announced Wednesday that their scientists will work together, on campus, to design new visual computing projects. Intel is giving Stanford $2.5 million a year, for five years, to support a new "Intel Science & Technology Center" that is focused on 3-D graphics research, according to a joint announcement Wednesday morning by Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner and Stanford computer graphics professor Pat Hanrahan.

But the new rules don't do enough to protect consumers and small companies on the Net. And thanks to the regulators' timidity, they may not last very long. Net neutrality is an arcane term that basically means consumers should be able to access any site or service they want on the Internet. It also means publishers of information or developers of applications or services can distribute their data to any Internet user without having to pay a toll to the users' network provider.
