The party was Friday night in the 1300 block of Rubenstein Avenue, the home of Shari Barman, a Busby supporter. It ended with Barman, 60, being arrested and jailed on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, and resisting, delaying and obstructing a peace officer.

Scuba diver helps get shark fin soup off menu

San Diego Union Tribune - By Ed Zieralski - Jan. 10 (News Report) - Scuba-diving enthusiast Carl Robbins noticed the menu in an advertising flyer from Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino. Among the offerings was shark fin soup, the controversial Asian delicacy that relies on the fins of sharks, some of which are finned and released in a mutilated state back into the sea. The practice is being blamed for a decrease in shark populations around the world. The Year of the Ox, which commences Jan. 26, was going to be started with some fin of the shark, which traces its beginnings to the Ming Dynasty in the mid-1300s. Outraged, Robbins sent e-mails to Barona and alerted fellow scuba divers and watermen. Robbins, citing Web sites and documentaries, detailed why it's inhumane to offer such a menu item. It's been estimated that every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. Robbins' e-mail to Dean Thomas, executive chef at Barona, explained his stance.

First, of course, is the immediate and overwhelming problem of how to fix the broken financial system while ensuring that not too many people lose their jobs or their homes. Then there are the other economic problems that have lingered over the past decade: How to address the challenges of globalism. How to achieve energy independence. How to regulate Wall Street. How to stem the erosion of the middle class. Sixty-five percent of Americans rank the economy as an extremely important issue for the next president, outranking terrorism, in second place at 52 percent, or energy policy, at 50 percent, according to a CNN Opinion Research Poll released last week.

In the year and a half since the cases began to surface, the county has updated its policies to require that a child's legal residency be established before they leave the system. But no one knows how many children were adopted without it, or what they'll face trying to stay in the only country they've known.

San Diego Union Tribune - By Dean Calbreath - Oct. 19 (News Analysis) - A month ago today, a global credit freeze – so severe that it seemed capable of pushing the world economy into a depression – prompted the White House to unveil a plan to pump hundreds of billions of dollars into the nation's financial system. Despite some slight easing over the past week, interest rates remain at historically high levels, making it difficult for banks and corporations to obtain needed loans. Interest-rate spreads – a major yardstick for measuring credit flows – remain at heights not seen since the post-Cold War recession of the early 1990s. Advertisement Economists say it could be well into 2009 before the credit market begins to approach a semblance of normalcy. Unless the credit crunch is resolved, the current recession could be much deeper and longer than it otherwise would be. Already, the problems have caused stock markets to plunge worldwide.

The Bush legacy

San Diego Union Tribune - Aug. 01 (Editorial) - President Bush cemented his own legacy this week, signing into law a dramatic expansion of his already unprecedented effort against AIDS in Africa and other desperate regions. His program is saving literally millions of lives, and it will stand as his greatest bipartisan foreign policy achievement. Approved with lopsided majorities by the House in April and the Senate last month, Bush signed the bill on Wednesday. It authorizes spending $48 billion over the next five years to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria – the three diseases of poverty – in the areas of the world that most need help. The $48 billion represents a more than threefold expansion of the program that Bush first announced in his State of the Union address in 2003 and was approved by Congress later that year. At the time, the Bush initiative was overshadowed in the headlines by the nation's focus on Iraq and the economy, despite the fact that the original $15 billion initiative was the largest commitment ever by any nation for a global battle against a single disease. Five years later, the new initiative is again overshadowed, and again by the focus on the economy and Iraq. And – for Bush, at least – that is a shame.

Imprisoned Cunningham outlines depths of corruption to FBI

Randy "Duke" Cunningham described a level of corruption on his part more extensive than previously known and dealt a potentially devastating blow to the defense being waged by one of the defense contractors alleged to have bribed him. The interviews were conducted in February at the federal prison near Tucson, where the longtime Republican congressman is serving an eight-year and four-month sentence after admitting to accepting more than $2.4 million in bribes. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion.

But a more recent study, published two years ago in Nature Genetics, revealed that the male "Y" chromosomes come from a much more limited number of stallions. This may mean that horses were domesticated by one single clever tribe and that, as the idea spread, others captured additional wild mares but mated them with domestic stallions obtained from their neighbors. Either way, Sandra Olsen, an archaeologist at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, believes that horses were first domesticated on the Eurasian steppes - that broad swath of grasslands that swept from Mongolia to Russia.

We need to build hundreds of miles of fencing, vastly expand our sensor network, and give Customs and Border Protection the powers it needs to stop intruders. While these measures alone won't fix all our immigration problems, I'm convinced they will constitute a good first step. Today, therefore, I'm going to lead the charge in the Senate to pass a bill authorizing expansion of the physical defenses along our border.
