Hard ball

Raleigh News Observer - Feb. 05 (Editorial) - Thanks to laws that mandate release of documents pertaining to the recruitment of industry, North Carolinians now have a clear and very ugly picture of just what went on behind the scenes as Caldwell County officials and legislators sought to land a Google computer center for Lenoir. It was no small deal: Google could bring as much as a $600 million investment and 200 jobs. The company got a sweet little arrangement, too, with tax breaks that could amount to $100 million over 30 years.

Incentives are just part of the recruiting game these days. States and localities have to balance what they can offer -- in Google's case, huge tax breaks on things such as electricity and equipment used by the company -- versus the economic benefit of having a company come to town. And companies are not shy about asking for the moon and stars, because the market is very competitive.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

To blame: a grand jury foreman's errant slash of a pen.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.2 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Raleigh News Observer - By Rob Christensen - Dec. 13 (News Report) - In fact, Edwards seemed to have little trouble fielding questions, ranging from the war in Iraq to his relative lack of foreign policy experience to his political ties to organized labor, before a live UNC-Chapel Hill crowd and a national TV audience.
"This is not hardball, this is batting practice," Matthews complained to the audience during a commercial break. "This guy is killing me. He couldn't do this four years ago."
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 10 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
