Pat Toomey, R-Pa., is sticking with his free-market rhetoric, co-sponsoring a bill Tuesday that would curb union membership.

The national Right to Work law, introduced by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a leader of the party's right wing, would forbid the establishment of a union-only workplace.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Could health-care reform loosen ‘job lock’?

HeraldNet - By Bill Toland - Sep. 06 (News Analysis) - some studies suggest that the quilt-work system of employee-paid health care is discouraging entrepreneurship.

That’s because of what’s known as “job lock,” a bit of economics jargon that’s been in vogue since the 1990s, the last time Congress and the president staged a real health reform debate. Basically, “job lock” means that you’re more likely to stay in your current job, which offers health insurance, than take a chance on a startup business, where health expenses would come out of your pocket. So people are “locked” into jobs that they no longer enjoy, where they are economically unproductive, or so the theory goes.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - By Joe Smydo - Feb. 06 (News Report) - Pittsburgh Oliver High School teacher Ken Smith doesn't want students to take history; he wants them "doing history."

And so the Pittsburgh Public Schools' new African-American history course is designed to stretch students' research, writing and thinking skills while taking them far behind the scenes of a people's struggle for freedom.

The district yesterday kicked off Black History Month by gathering civic leaders and school supporters at the Senator John Heinz History Center to introduce the course and a program bringing black artists into three schools.

The initiatives are intended to promote achievement among black students who, as a group, trail white students academically.

"We have to connect with the kids. We have to be relevant to them," history center President and Chief Executive Officer Andy Masich said.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

That's the bottom-line message Tom Ridge has for hyperventilating Republicans sorting through the wreckage of their defeat at the polls on Nov. 4.

"Just take a deep breath and exhale slowly," said Mr. Ridge, former Pennsylvania governor and U.S. homeland security secretary. "Forget about the finger-pointing, and start figuring out the way to a future that makes us relevant not just to our traditional constituency but to independents and independent-thinking Republicans and Democrats."
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

As Cullen put it, "You could drive from the East Coast to the West Coast and never hear anything other than a right-wing point of view."
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The lawyers urge the audience, in so many words, to do exactly the opposite.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Drugs, obscenity and public corruption.

In the more than five years she's been in office, Ms. Buchanan has followed that charge with diligence.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Despite this deliberate overinflation of the facts, it remains a laudable and important goal to reduce the number of uninsured. Tax credits for lower-income individuals, however, are the best method for achieving this goal -- not universal health care.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
