OneWorld - Jul. 10 (News Report) - Over two dozen AIDS activists were arrested just outside the U.S. Capitol building yesterday while protesting President Barack Obama's failure to honor his campaign promises of increased funding for AIDS programs. During the election, Obama pledged to spend over $1 billion a year on global AIDS and to fully fund housing for HIV-positive people in need. Activists say the administration's 2010 budget proposal does not live up to these promises.

Carbon Trading Blasted by Indigenous Groups

OneWorld - By Haider Rizvi - May. 06 (News Report) - The United Nations is facing scathing criticism from the world's indigenous communities for its attempts to promote carbon trading as a tool to address climate change concerns. "The UN is allowing companies who are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases to continue to pollute," said Tom Goldtooth of the U.S.-based Indigenous Environment Network (IEN). Last week, at the end of a two-week international gathering, a UN body said the World Bank funding for carbon trading had set "good examples" for partnership with indigenous peoples. The term "carbon trading" refers to commercial approaches to promoting environmental responsibility. Under carbon trading programs, energy companies and others that release greenhouse gases can either agree to reduce their carbon emissions or buy the right to keep polluting.

Exactly 424 of these attacks were carried out by "separatist terrorists" such as the Basque group Eta, operating in Spain and France, and were limited to the Basque region and Corsica. Eta itself was responsible for 136 of these. Left-wing and anarchist groups, active in Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain, carried out 55 attacks. The vast majority of these resulted in lim ited material damage and were not designed to kill. Only one, carried out by Eta in Madrid, was deadly, producing two fatalities.

Deserter's Surrender Highlights War's Emotional Trauma

Anderson, who won a Purple Heart for taking shrapnel to protect the rest of his unit from a roadside bomb, turned himself in at Fort Knox, Kentucky on Tuesday after seeking refuge in Canada. Anderson's mother and lawyer anticipated that the U.S. Army would spare him harsh punishment and instead allow him to receive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While military officials had yet to pronounce their final decision as of Wednesday, Anderson's case highlighted what veterans' advocates identified as the challenge of tending to returning warriors' emotional wounds.

Thailand websites and radio stations shut down by military junta

OneWorld - Oct. 04 (Special Report) - The military junta that since September 19 has taken over government in Thailand has shut down at least two critical websites and also numerous local radio stations. The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) calls for your support to urge that people in Thailand be entitled to speak and act freely in response to the illegal takeover of power by the army. The two websites that have been shut down were a new one set up by human rights defenders in Thailand in response to the coup, www.19sep.org, which was closed shortly after it was activated, and the Midnight University website, www.midnightuniv.org. Midnight University is a leading non-formal education centre. Its Thai-language website has been well-established, with over half a million visitors per month from all over the world, thousands of articles and discussion boards. The site was shut down on September 29 after its staff held a protest against the coup on September 28, during which they ripped up pieces of paper labelled "interim constitution", in reference to the temporary charter that the military regime has had prepared. The protest was not covered in the mainstream media but reported on the independent Prachatai website (in Thai).

Earthquake Survivors at Risk as Himalyan Winter Starts Early

OneWorld - Oct. 04 (News Report) - One year after the Oct. 8, 2005, Pakistan earthquake, more than 1.8 million people face a second winter in makeshift shelters and tents, warns aid agency Oxfam International in a report published today. Much has been achieved in the aftermath of the earthquake and a second humanitarian crisis amid sub-zero temperatures was averted last winter, according to the agency. However, the scale of the catastrophe, difficult mountainous terrain, poor infrastructure, extreme weather conditions, problems with disseminating public information, as well as gaps in support for some vulnerable groups, have hindered the pace of reconstruction. As a result, many are still at risk with snow already falling in one of the highest regions in the world “With snow already falling, this winter seems to have arrived early. Besides materials that will strengthen their homes against the harsh conditions, people in temporary shelter in rural and mountain areas need sustained access to safe heating and other essential items,” says Farhana Faruqi Stocker from Oxfam International.
