Obsidian Wings - By Publius - Sep. 02 (Comment) - What exactly is the evidence that the Taliban would provide a safe haven? Unless such evidence exists, I don't see any national security interest whatsoever in Afghanistan, with or without the Taliban.

Obsidian Wings - By Eric Martin - Apr. 10 (Comment) - Even if we succeed in stamping out the safe havens in Afghanistan and Pakistan, terrorists could merely relocate. If multi-decade, multi-trillion dollar campaigns are required to nation build and clean out any and all safe havens, we'll go bankrupt chasing shadows (it should be noted that Osama bin Laden has stated, repeatedly, that he plans on draining our resources by getting us to do just that).

Poverty

Obsidian Wings - By Hilzoy - Nov. 25 (Comment) - People are described as being in "deep poverty" when they make less than half of that amount. The idea that there will be 1.5-2 million kids in families making half the poverty level is horrifying.

Obsidian Wings - By Publius - Nov. 09 (Special Report) - the Bush administration is implementing a series of “midnight rules” before they leave town. And as Hilzoy noted earlier, the incoming Obama administration is examining ways to reverse these and other Bush rules. Interestingly enough, an obscure Gingrich-era law called the “Congressional Review Act of 1996” (CRA) could help the Dems prevent these rules from taking effect. It’s been used just once – by the Bush administration to overturn last-minute Clinton ergonomics regulations. But maybe it’s time to dust it off and take it for a spin.
