Debt 'Super Committee' Nearly Complete, At 9 Members

NPR - Aug. 10 (News Report) - BILL CHAPPELL The new "Debt Supercommittee" created by the recent deficit ceiling deal now has 9 of its 12 members, as House Speaker John Boehner says Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas will co-chair the new committee, according to the AP. The panel's task will be to create a bipartisan plan for cutting the federal deficit by around $1.5 trillion. That money could come from a combination of spending cuts and raising revenue. If the panel fails to reach an agreement, automatic cuts would be made — and the automated cuts were crafted to be unpalatable to both of the major political parties.

NPR - By Jacob Goldstein - Apr. 17 (News Report) - The White House launched an official taxpayer receipt today. You enter how much you paid in income taxes, and how much you paid for Social Security and Medicare (which have their own special taxes, and are broken out on your W-2). The calculator tells you, dollar by dollar, what you taxes paid for. Take, for example, a married couple that made $80,000, has kids and put 5 percent of their income into a tax-deferred retirement plan. 'New York Times' Unveils Metered Online Paywall

All Things Considered - By David Folkenflik - Mar. 18 (News Report) - The Times is unveiling a metered system under which the paper's most loyal readers would pay for access to the website, though most casual online readers would not pay a cent. Print subscribers would also continue to receive unfettered access at no additional cost. Executives say the time is right, as people have been conditioned by tablets and smart phones to pay for access to content. "We have to be agnostic in regard to how people digest the news product," Janet Robinson, the CEO of The New York Times Co., said in an interview with NPR. "We can't force them to buy a print subscription. We can't force them to buy a digital application. We have to be there in every venue."

One team of scientists recently unearthed a different kind of Roman artifact that may hold a strange clue to the empire's downfall. A study of tree rings recently published in the journal Science provides evidence of climate shifts that, perhaps not coincidentally, occurred from A.D. 250 to 550, a period better known as the fall of the Roman Empire.

NPR - By Corey Dade - Oct. 02 (News Report) - To mobilize Hispanic voters in November, big labor and advocates of liberal efforts at overhauling immigration laws have announced a $300,000 ad campaign attacking Republican Senators for blocking passage of the so-called DREAM Act. The ad will air on Spanish-language radio stations in Arizona, Florida, Nevada and other states with large Latino populations. The effort was conceived and funded by the Service Employees International Union, Mi Familia Vota and America's Voice, which say the $300,000 is the most ever spent on a Spanish-language radio campaign by groups such as theirs to make their case on immigration.
