Obama sets the stage for health care reform battle

Newsday - Jun. 11 (Editorial) - Obama's PAYGO push met with some guffaws. A president who inherited a huge deficit, made it even bigger and then called for fiscal discipline, is an easy target. But as Washington moves beyond economic crisis management to structural reform, living within its means is key. It's no coincidence that PAYGO was in place in the 1990s when deficits became surpluses, or that deficits reappeared after it was abandoned. Health care for all is important. So is responsibly paying for it.

Phelps - Oct. 09 (News Report) - Amatzia Baram, an Israeli expert on Iraq, said recently the impending British pullout will force the U.S. to move troops into the area to keep the road open and guard oil fields, even as it is attempting to draw down troops elsewhere in the country. Even U.S. generals have conceded publicly there is little the British can do to resolve the main conflict in the south. But privately, some U.S. officials complain the new prime minister is abdicating his country's role in the war, deeply unpopular in Britain, because it is politically expedient.

Congress should reclaim Senate's authority to confirm U.S. attorneys

Newsday - Mar. 21 (Editorial) - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Congress neglected that sage advice by including a provision in the USA Patriot Act, when it was reauthorized last year, allowing the attorney general to appoint U.S. attorneys without Senate confirmation. That was a mistake the Senate moved yesterday to rectify. It voted 94-2 to return the law to what it was before that latest tweak. The bill it approved set a 120-day deadline for administration officials to appoint an interim U.S. attorney and win Senate confirmation for the choice. Failing that, a federal district judge would appoint the replacement.
