Khan - Apr. 20 (Opinion) - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed his economic team headed by his advisor on finance, Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, to bring inflation down to provide relief to the common man. This is indeed an encouraging development as the prime minister has started taking briefings on the economy and issuing directions to his economic team.

The News International (PK) - May. 11 (Editorial) - Scant attention has thus far been paid to how the Taliban and some other extremist groups fund their operations. The ‘traditional’ picture is that there is a global network of informal funders and sympathizers, as well as at least two large state players in the Muslim world. Yet a picture is now emerging which tells a very different story as to how these groups get their money and sustain themselves – with three natural resources namely gemstones, timber and marble featuring strongly. The Afghan Taliban have long made their money in the opium trade, and to a small extent they do that in Pakistan; but Pakistan has always been a small-scale opium producer and the Taliban and others need bigger bucks. Necessity, goes the saying, is the mother of invention, and income diversity is now the name of the game.

‘Nearly 15 million environmental refugees likely’

The News International (PK) - By Shahid Husain - Dec. 31 (News Report) - Global warming and the ongoing thinning of Tibetan glaciers will result in as many as 15 million ‘environmental refugees’ in South Asia in the near future, said Chairperson Hisaar Foundation and member of Stockholm-based Global Water Partnership Technical Committee, Simi Kamal.

The News International (PK) - By Hassan Abbas - Dec. 08 (News Analysis) - The ugly face of religious extremism and radicalisation leading to violence in South Asia can only be defeated by these three countries through reconciliation, mutual cooperation and by forgiving each others' past mistakes. United States under Obama presidency can facilitate as well as complement such a transformation by supporting those in this region whose rights have been trampled upon and to whom justice has been denied. That would be a sure way to play a constructive role in stabilising the region.
