New York Post - By Gregory Bresiger - Sep. 19 (Special Report) - How bad is the nation's debt problem?
While the official number -- $13.4 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office -- is frightening enough, some analysts say the actual figure is much, much higher. Like a shopaholic who hides their credit card bills, the government pretends certain obligations and expenditures don't exist. Uncle Sam really owes closer to $60 trillion, or more, and the country is close to bankrupcy.
"The government is lying about the amount of debt," says Laurence Kotlikoff, an economist at Boston University and co-author of "The Coming Generational Storm: What You Need to Know about America's Economic Future." "It is engaging in Enron accounting."
NewsTrust Rating: 2.7 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

New York Post - By Amir Taheri - Dec. 15 (Opinion) - Barack Obama has been toying with the idea of dia logue with the Islamic world for two years now - but he has yet to approach the idea of actually saying anything meaningful.

At one point, his advisers talked of convening a White House summit with Muslim leaders. When that scheme was exposed as fanciful, they recommended that he attend the Islamic Summit Conference, convened once every three years. But that, too, has turned out to be problematic - so now they talking of plans for "a major address in an Islamic capital."

And yet Obama - despite Jeremiah Wright, despite the Muslim rumors - has had a far better relationship with the religious right than you might think. The masterstroke comes next week, when the Obama campaign launches The Joshua Generation Project (Sounds both Biblical and sci-fi, no?). Its goal: to solicit, engage, and win the votes of young evangelicals, young Catholics, and "people of faith."
NewsTrust Rating: 1.6 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

New York Post - By Charles Hurt - Aug. 03 (News Report) - John Edwards, who yesterday demanded Democratic candidates return any campaign donations from Rupert Murdoch and News Corp., himself earned at least $800,000 for a book published by one of the media mogul's companies.
The Edwards campaign said the multimillionaire trial lawyer would not return the hefty payout from Murdoch for the book titled "Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives."

The campaign didn't respond to a question from The Post about whether it was hypocritical for Edwards to take money from News Corp. while calling for other candidates not to.

In addition to a $500,000 advance from HarperCollins, which is owned by News Corp., Edwards also was cut a check for $300,000 for expenses.

Edwards claimed $333,334 in royalties from last year's release of the book, according to media accounts. The campaign said last night that those funds were part of the advance.
NewsTrust Rating: 1.8 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Real Sins of the CIA

New York Post - By Angelo M. Codevilla - Jul. 02 (Opinion) - THE CIA last week released a heavily redacted version of a 1973 report what it considers its fathers' sins. There was nothing new: In the '70s and '80s, agency employees on all sides of the quarrels over what the CIA should do shopped their versions of the report to whoever would listen on the congressional Intelligence Committees (including myself) as well as to the press.

These quarrels were rooted in the deep political, social and personal animosities that split the CIA's founding generation. Riding the post-Vietnam/Watergate wave of U.S. politics, one CIA faction wrote the report to discredit and oust their bureaucratic rivals.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

While Microsoft and Yahoo! have held informal deal talks over the years, sources say the latest approach signals an urgency on Microsoft's part that has up until now been lacking.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Hillary Rodham Clinton last night ripped into 2008 White House contender John Edwards - her first direct assault on any of her potential Democratic presidential rivals.

Clinton's surprising broadside came just hours after Edwards, in Harlem, delivered a sharp condemnation - clearly aimed at Clinton, although he didn't mention her by name - against those who fail to "speak out" against the war in Iraq.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
