Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president on Sunday, criticizing his own Republican Party for what he called its narrow focus on irrelevant personal attacks over a serious approach to challenges he called unprecedented. Powell, who for many years was considered the most likely candidate to become the first African-American president, said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he was not supporting Obama because of his race. He said he had watched both Obama and his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, for many months and thought “either one of them would be a good president.” But he said McCain’s choices in the last few weeks — especially his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his vice presidential running mate — had raised questions in his mind about McCain’s judgment.

Big mistake. And it happens all the time. Did you catch the report of the gentleman who had $230,000 on deposit at IndyMac? He was concerned that he might not have full FDIC insurance, but a bank teller had told him it was no problem. She said that even though the FDIC offers full repayment up to $100,000 per account at a bank, all he had to do was open a few different accounts at that bank, each with $100,000 of insurance, and all his money would be safe if anything happened to the bank. WRONG WRONG WRONG.

The tour lasted 22 months and had been extended as part of President Bush's surge. ... Anderson's orders, and the orders of 1,161 other Minnesota guard members, were written for 729 days. Had they been written for 730 days, just one day more, the soldiers would receive those benefits to pay for school.

NBC's Nightly News provided further details about McCain's one-hour guided tour. He was accompanied by "100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead." Still photographs provided by the military to NBC News seemed to show McCain wearing a bulletproof vest during his visit.

They say it started during a mission to Baghdad International Airport, when their supervisor, who was leaving Iraq the next day and was in the vehicle with them, made a troubling remark. "He'd made a comment that he was going to kill somebody today," says Schmidt. "Kill someone." The two men say they thought he was joking.

From the beginning, Iraqis in the town of Haditha said U.S. Marines deliberately killed 15 unarmed Iraqi civilians, including seven women and three children.
