Bush was preparing to put his famed Prairie Chapel Ranch up for sale as soon as his presidency was over. Among some residents of the town that became home to the Western White House, the possibility of Mr. Bush's departure stirred resentment and snickers. Here was just another tenderfoot outsider who bought a ranch for show, but ultimately couldn't hack the 38C heat, constant wind and parched grasslands of central Texas. Then one day in August, first lady Laura Bush visited the Red Bull gift shop on Crawford's lonely main street to set things straight. "There'd been a rumour about them selling the ranch, and she just said it wasn't true, and they're ready to come home and to relax," said Jamie Burgess, the store's owner. Mrs. Bush was true to her word.

Ron Paul: Fighting for Liberty and China, all in one vote

National Post - Aug. 02 (News Report) - You may have noticed a news item this week mentioning a visit to Washington by a group of Chinese dissidents, and a related House vote criticizing Beijng for its abuse of human rights. The House measure urged China to honour promises it made to improve its rights record before the start of the Olympic Games on Aug. 8. The vote passed by a margin of 419-1. It thoroughly riled Chinese authorities, who were already upset at the White House for hosting the dissidents. Liu Jianchao, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, described it as "odious conduct" and said the United States should stop "making use of so-called religious and human rights" issues to score political points. You might wonder who the single dissenting voter was. Some friend of China? A Congressman who woke suddenly and accidentally voted for the wrong side? Nope, it was Ron Paul, erstwhile candidate for the Republican presidential nomination and leading proponent of small government. Paul heads the Campaign for Liberty, which is at present busy promoting a Rally for the Republic in Minneapolis, with special guests Jesse Ventura and Rockie Lynne. Paul describes himself as "the leading advocate for freedom in our nation's capital" and the "mission" of the Campaign for Liberty is "to promote and defend the great American principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets, and a noninterventionist foreign policy, by means of educational and political activity."

Film dared to deny climate change: 'misleading' rubbish, watchdog says

National Post - Jul. 21 (News Report) - In Britain, a Channel 4 documentary that claimed man-made climate change is a fraud broke strict broadcasting rules on impartiality, the media regulator said on Monday, Reuters reports. That's right, there are extreme rules on impartiality for broadcast news in the U.K. The show, written and directed by film-maker Martin Durkin, was first shown in March, 2007 and has been described as a response to Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth: r. Durkin's film drew 265 complaints and provoked an intense debate on its central claim -- that the human impact on global warming and climate change has been wildly overstated.

National Post - By Lawrence Solomon - Jun. 20 (News Analysis) - With less heat and less carbon dioxide, the planet could become less hospitable and less green. Planet Earth is on a roll! GPP is way up. NPP is way up. To the surprise of those who have been bearish on the planet, the data shows global production has been steadily climbing to record levels, ones not seen since these measurements began. GPP is Gross Primary Production, a measure of the daily output of the global biosphere -- the amount of new plant matter on land. NPP is Net Primary Production, an annual tally of the globe's production. Biomass is booming. The planet is the greenest it's been in decades, perhaps in centuries. Until the 1980s, ecologists had no way to systematically track growth in plant matter in every corner of the Earth -- the best they could do was analyze small plots of one-tenth of a hectare or less. The notion of continuously tracking global production to discover the true state of the globe's biota was not even considered. Then, in the 1980s, ecologists realized that satellites could track production, and enlisted NASA to collect the data. For the first time, ecologists did not need to rely on rough estimates or anecdotal evidence of the health of the ecology: They could objectively measure the land's output and soon did -- on a daily basis and down to the last kilometre.

Maclean's hearing missing relevance

National Post - By Brian Hutchinson - Jun. 04 (News Report) - Were they not inexorably entwined in the mock trial of Maclean's magazine and the attempt to limit legal expression of opinion in this country, the four legal amigos seated at the B. C. Human Rights Tribunal's table of complaints would almost be pitiable. Not pitiful. Faisal Joseph is a former Crown counsel now in private practice, and the lawyer in charge of bringing two human rights complaints against Maclean's, "on behalf of all the Muslim residents of the province of British Columbia." That alone is ludicrous. Presumptuous. And false. The province's Muslim community was not canvassed prior to the proceedings. It did not endorse Mr. Joseph's mission. Indeed, aside from Mr. Joseph and his legal assistants, only a few Muslims have attended the hearing, taking place this week inside a B. C. provincial courtroom.
