But I’ve been involved in enough business contractions to know that — when the trends are obvious and irreversible — it’s rarely a good idea to dither, cutting headcount a few people at a time. Nothing kills morale more than a series of limited but constantly repeated cuts. It’s almost always better to get ahead of the curve, cut deeply and swiftly one time, and give those who remain the chance to mourn but simultaneously understand that their ship is now more stable and sustainable.
