Kansas City Star - By Andrew J. Gunther, James J. Mccarthy - Mar. 21 (News Analysis) - We are scientists who agree with critics such as Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., that there is a climate change "hoax" being perpetrated on the American people. We just don't agree on what the hoax is and who is being fooled. Sen. Inhofe and his associates want us to believe that the science of climate change is the contrived "hoax." Their claims cannot withstand even the most cursory scrutiny. Evolution is a miracle that leaves me endlessly curious

Kansas City Star - By Cole Morgan - Apr. 09 (Opinion) - Science, I believe, has shown us that life evolved on this Earth in a natural state according to its own energy. This, to me, is enough. This is the miracle. I am lucky enough to know I am a part of all this. To know I am a part of all life on Earth is an amazing thing to know. To share similar DNA with every living creature is an amazing thing to experience. We are all part of one another. As all of life has evolved, we humans, through trial and error, have advanced through many cultures. We have screwed up and been successful. Discovering what works and doesn’t work is at the root of curiosity, and curiosity is humankind’s salvation. That is why, even though I am not a scientist, I promote science whenever I can. For example, I help promote the Johnson County Science Cafe, part of a nationwide movement to present a wide array of science subjects to audiences of naturally curious people, both religious and nonreligious. At each Science Cafe meeting, a speaker gives a short talk on a scientific subject at a level average people can understand. Afterward, we enjoy a casual around-the-room conversation. The speakers are very open to questions. I think there should be far more of these kinds of venues offered to the public. They should be in our schools. Perhaps there would be less future misunderstandings in society if children were more involved with events like this. I believe the reason we disagree so often about civil issues is because of this lack of science education. Perhaps it would help if we stepped out of our comfort zones and checked out new ideas. Some Christians with whom I speak feel differently. They behave almost as though we weren’t meant to know all things. Is there forbidden knowledge? Is there anything we are better off not knowing about? I don’t think so. Some people yearn for the good ol’ days, but I’m not one of them. I wouldn’t trade modern science, medicine or technology for any other time in history. And frankly, this focus on the past curbs our curiosity and slows down our advancement. As an atheist, I feel America should be more educated in science and critical thinking. These are crucial if we are to better understand one another and overcome bigotry. In a time of budget cuts, yacht sales sail through untaxed in Missouri

Kansas City Star - By MIKE McGRAW - Feb. 20 (News Report) - Cash-strapped legislators have recommended spending cuts for Missouri schools and shelters for battered women, but so far the yachting class can enjoy another season of clear sailing. Thanks to a longstanding tax exemption, Missouri’s marina set can opt to pay a small fee in lieu of sales taxes and shave as much as $30,000 off the purchase of a $500,000 boat. That tax exemption alone is depriving state and local coffers of more than $6 million a year, according to some estimates. It’s just one of more than 130 untaxed transactions that are getting renewed attention in Jefferson City because of the state’s continuing budget crisis.

Bush hasn’t kept US safe

Kansas City Star - By Rebecca Brock - Jan. 04 (Opinion) - I am hearing a lot of talk about President Bush’s legacy, and some have suggested that he should be credited for keeping America safe after 9/11 because there wasn’t a second attack. The U.S. was not attacked after 9/11 because the terrorists had nothing to gain by a second attack. The stated goal of the terrorists was to draw attention to the unjust foreign policy of the United States, especially its disregard for the suffering of the Palestinians. The Bush administration responded in an irrational, dishonest and immoral way that only reinforced the message sent by the terrorists on 9/11. Over the past eight years the terrorists have won more hearts and minds than the Bush administration. The conditions that breed terrorism are increasing rather than decreasing, especially in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine. Sympathy for Palestine and resentment of Israel and the United States continues to grow. Tragically, the “Mission Accomplished” sign might belong to Osama bin Laden rather than George Bush.

Voters want solutions as health insurance costs rise sharply

But that’s how it’s turning out. “I’m working basically because of health care,” said Coffman, 62, a retired school principal who lives with his wife in Lee’s Summit. Until they qualify for Medicare, they have to buy private coverage. For now, their insurance bills amount to around $1,000 a month — including long-term care insurance, dental insurance and a health plan that has a $2,500 deductible. If he weren’t working two part-time jobs, Coffman said, there would be no way he could afford it. “I never once thought about health insurance before I retired,” Coffman said.

His answers have been edited for space and clarity. What sort of evolution do you see to the war in Iraq? We're in trouble. The American people walked away from the war.
