They also wonder if years of electronic monitoring have made Houstonians better, if not more cautious, drivers.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Woodlands-based company has a 25 percent nonoperating stake in the Macondo oil well gushing in the Gulf of Mexico. The company has argued that it's not responsible for costs arising from an operating partner's "negligence" or "willfull misconduct" — something it accuses BP of in relation to the spill.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Houston Chronicle - By Loren Steffy - Jun. 10 (News Report) - Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help. It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.

The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,'” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.

Now, almost seven weeks later, as the oil spewing from the battered well spreads across the Gulf and soils pristine beaches and coastline, BP and our government have reconsidered.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Scouring job boards and dropping résumés into a seemingly endless abyss were getting him nowhere.

“That's why I resorted to the sign,” he said.

For nearly two months now, Williams, 43, has spent his 9 to 5 carrying a sign in downtown Houston, either in the tunnels beneath energy companies, banks and law firms, or aboveground, on paths that hiring executives might tread at lunchtime.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Instead, a new and growing threat to an accurate national head count is coming from anti-government conservatives who may not fill out their forms to protest against “Big Brother” in Washington.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

An economics lesson on the beer aisle

Houston Chronicle - By Lisa Gray - Mar. 26 (Special Report) - We were in front of Walmart's beer fridge, looking at a $7.97 six-pack of Samuel Adams. “You think that's a good price for beer,” said my old neighbor, Barry Lynn. “But it's not.”

The price of beer is the kind of thing that we used to talk about years ago, when I lived in Washington, D.C., and Barry was my Sam Adams-drinking downstairs neighbor. But lately, when he talks about the price of beer, he's not just talking about the bottle in his hand. He's talking about globalized monopoly capitalism.

Back in 2006 — long before phrases like “TARP,” “stimulus package” and “bailout” had entered my vocabulary — Barry published a book on the coming crash of corporations too big to fail.

These days, he works for a think tank, The New America Foundation, and he was in Houston to sign his new book, Cornered.

“A manifesto for our time,” Thomas Frank at the Wall Street Journal called it. And on its front cover glows a blurb from no less than Barbara Ehrenreich: “Cornered has changed my view of what's gone wrong with American capitalism.”

What is it that's wrong? You can see it, Barry said, right here in the beer aisle.
NewsTrust Rating: 5.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
