Accidents fall at Houston red-light camera intersections

The drop in accidents surprised Houston police administrators who say a possible explanation is the unusually dry weather during recent months has made driving conditions safer. They also wonder if years of electronic monitoring have made Houstonians better, if not more cautious, drivers.

It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands. The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,'” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston. Now, almost seven weeks later, as the oil spewing from the battered well spreads across the Gulf and soils pristine beaches and coastline, BP and our government have reconsidered.

Houston Chronicle - By Lisa Gray - Mar. 26 (Special Report) - We were in front of Walmart's beer fridge, looking at a $7.97 six-pack of Samuel Adams. “You think that's a good price for beer,” said my old neighbor, Barry Lynn. “But it's not.” The price of beer is the kind of thing that we used to talk about years ago, when I lived in Washington, D.C., and Barry was my Sam Adams-drinking downstairs neighbor. But lately, when he talks about the price of beer, he's not just talking about the bottle in his hand. He's talking about globalized monopoly capitalism. Back in 2006 — long before phrases like “TARP,” “stimulus package” and “bailout” had entered my vocabulary — Barry published a book on the coming crash of corporations too big to fail. These days, he works for a think tank, The New America Foundation, and he was in Houston to sign his new book, Cornered. “A manifesto for our time,” Thomas Frank at the Wall Street Journal called it. And on its front cover glows a blurb from no less than Barbara Ehrenreich: “Cornered has changed my view of what's gone wrong with American capitalism.” What is it that's wrong?
