Financial Times - Mar. 25 (Opinion) - Yao warns the West against misinterpreting the Chinese government's increasing control over the economy as a dramatic policy change. The government is actually making difficult choices under growing political constraints. The domestic investment drive that has seen government stimulus packages and local spending rise to close to $1,000bn is cyclical rather than permanent, while China's insistence on a stable currency is designed to ensure stronger employment and social stability rather than an attempt to gain advantage from trading partners. Despite these explanations, Yao says the Chinese government can reduce anxiety in the West by recognizing that greater statism will not bring benefits to China in the long term. Equally, the US needs to recognize that not every move made by the Chinese government is the result of some grand orchestrated plan.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Nowadays it might be called America’s Fitful Reverie. Indeed, Mark spends large monthly sums renting a machine to treat his sleep apnea, which gives him insomnia. “If we lost our jobs, we would have about three weeks of savings to draw on before we hit the bone,” says Mark, who is sitting on his patio keeping an eye on the street and swigging from a bottle of Miller Lite. “We work day and night and try to save for our retirement.
Financial Times - By Martin Wolf - Jul. 26 (Opinion) - My reading of contemporary Republican thinking is that there is no chance of any attempt to arrest adverse long-term fiscal trends should they return to power. Moreover, since the Republicans have no interest in doing anything sensible, the Democrats will gain nothing from trying to do much either. That is the lesson Democrats have to draw from the Clinton era’s successful frugality, which merely gave George W. Bush the opportunity to make massive (irresponsible and unsustainable) tax cuts. In practice, then, nothing will be done.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.3 average - 7 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Financial Times - By Chris Giles, David Oakley - Mar. 15 (News Report) - Moody’s Investor Service, the credit rating agency, will fire a warning shot at the US on Monday, saying that unless the country gets public finances into better shape than the Obama administration projects there would be “downward pressure” on its triple A credit rating.

Examining the administration’s outlook for the federal budget deficit, the agency said: “If such a trajectory were to materialise, there would at some point be downward pressure on the triple A rating of the federal government.”
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
