No medals yet for China on human rights

Detroit Free Press - Aug. 06 (Editorial) - For participants and most of the people watching, the Olympics are about the competition, the world's premier athletes giving their all to see who among them will be declared best in the world.

But for the host country, the games are also about image and opportunity, about investing billions of dollars to show off a dynamic place to the world and, when the games are gone, attract investment and tourism. For China, where the summer Olympics open Friday, this is also a bid to leave the ranks of the world's "rising powers" to take a permanent seat next to the United States at the table of global leaders.

China has much to display. No nation in human history has ever moved so many people so quickly from poverty to a semblance of middle class. The visible progress in China's major cities is truly stunning. But there also is much that China would like to hide. On human rights, environmental protection, intellectual property rights and trade, the Chinese still prefer to play by their own rules.
