Another soldier was sent overseas who had mental-health issues, and another suffered from nerve damage to his groin area and had been taking morphine for seven months. When that soldier went to a clinic in Iraq to ask for more pain medication, medical professionals said he could not have it and he was sent home, according to Nelson. Instead of going to Iraq, he went to another Kuwait post, Camp Arifjan. Nelson said he was told by superiors that he would be in charge of 52 soldiers who were receiving medical treatment. "I expected to find a whole bunch of people, but when I got there, they were all gone. They were already all in Iraq," Nelson said.

A quarter of all third-graders in the state have untreated dental decay, figures show. The consequences go beyond the achy jaw or gap-toothed smile, Paulson said. Tooth and gum infections can trigger heart and lung disease and make it harder for diabetics to regulate their blood sugar, Paulson said.

Bush justice is a national disgrace

Officials who have brought into disrepute both the Department of Justice and the administration of justice as a whole should finally have to answer for it - and the misdeeds at issue involve not merely garden-variety misconduct, but multiple "high crimes and misdemeanors," including war crimes and crimes against humanity. I realize that this constitutionally protected statement subjects me to a substantial risk of unlawful reprisal from extremely ruthless people who have repeatedly taken such action in the past. But I am confident that I am speaking on behalf of countless thousands of honorable public servants, at Justice and elsewhere, who take their responsibilities seriously and share these views. And some things must be said, whatever the risk.

Lack of awareness about HIV infection, denial about risky behaviors, homophobia, substance abuse and lack of health care contribute to higher rates among Latinos and African-Americans, health department officials say. "We have noted that people of color wait to be tested longer than other people do," said Bob Bongiovanni, who oversees HIV/AIDS programs for the state Department of Health. "It's built into the larger issue of being shut out of health care much more than other people."
