Daily Times (Pakistan) - Aug. 04 (Editorial) - A House of Commons report published in the United Kingdom says that “the UK faced more threat from inside Pakistan than from Afghanistan’s Helmand province”. The Labour-chaired Commons foreign affairs select committee report also raises the alarming spectre of Al Qaeda, “which has shifted its focus into Pakistan”. The committee that issued the report was told by an expert that “a direct attack on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons infrastructure could not be ruled out”.

The federal government has taken serious note by sending in the Rangers and the Punjab government has ordered an inquiry into what really transpired. Compensation for the destroyed property has already been announced.

Was the defiant and anarchic behaviour of the protesters aimed only at registering protest or did it have a wider political agenda of targeting the federal government? This may be the emergence of a new type of violent popular disposition and political culture that threatens democracy.

Even postwar reconstruction in Iraq under the US-led occupation was run by the Pentagon rather than by civilian agencies. The US military budget dominates everything about foreign policy. Adding up the budgets of the Pentagon, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the Department of Homeland Security, nuclear weapons programs, and the State Department's military assistance operations, the US will spend around $800 billion this year on security, compared with less than $20 billion for economic development.

Pakistan no longer sellable in Washington

Daily Times (Pakistan) - Nov. 08 (News Report) - Another sign of how unpopular and difficult it has become to defend or sell Pakistan's case in Washington after the declaration of an emergency by President Gen Pervez Musharraf came this week when Cassidy & Associates, a lobbying firm that had won a $1.2 million annual contract from the Pakistan government only last month, threw in the towel, saying it could no longer "effectively fulfil" its mission. In a terse statement on Wednesday, Cassidy, a large and well-known company, said, "Recent developments in Pakistan have made it difficult to effectively fulfill our mission on behalf of the Embassy of Pakistan. These dramatic changes have forced us to most respectfully withdraw our representation of the embassy effective today." US envoy: Former US ambassador Robin Raphel told this correspondent, "Developments have regrettably made it necessary to withdraw because under the circumstances we cannot do what we agreed to do. I do hope things will take a turn for the better in Pakistan soon." Last month, Raphel told Daily Times, "Cassidy & Associates has been retained to help the Pakistan Embassy ensure that the facts about the complexities of the challenges Pakistan faces in the crucial months ahead are better understood by the Congress, agencies in Washington, and the American public. One of those facts is that there is indeed common ground between the PPP and the current government in Pakistan." The Pakistan embassy had no comment.

Pakistan: Martial law not acceptable: US

Rice has urged Gen Musharraf to go ahead with the elections planned for January. "I am not going to get into the details of our conversations but I think it would be quite obvious that the US would not be supportive of extra-constitutional means," she said on a trip to Turkey. "Pakistan needs to prepare for and hold free and fair elections," she said, adding that she had not spoken to General Musharraf recently.

US Congress Jolts Musharraf

Daily Times (Pakistan) - Jul. 30 (Editorial) - There is much disturbance in the dovecotes of Islamabad after the announcement that the White House has agreed to sign into law a counter-terrorism bill passed by the US Congress that also proposes new conditionalities on US assistance to Pakistan. Already, some retired Pakistani diplomats have appeared on TV channels to advise the government to "break off" with the United States and go its own way, which means listening to the "voice of the people" condemning the US as a "crusader against Islam". The parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, too, has welcomed a similar briefing from an ex-foreign secretary.

Bush okayed 'soft revolution' in Iran

Daily Times (Pakistan) - May. 27 (Special Report) - The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) received American presidential approval for a covert operation in Iran aimed at destabilizing the Islamic Republic by "non-lethal" means, The Jerusalem Post quoted a report by ABC news on Saturday. According to the report, the plan includes several non-military measures by which the US could deeply harm the Iranian economy through global measures while simultaneously undermining the regime on a local political level by distributing propaganda and building on an already existing lack of support for the regime among Iranians. Global economic measures would include manipulating currencies and making large-scale monetary transactions which would damage Iranian companies. A commentator pointed "ferment among the students and the intellectuals" of Iran as fertile ground from which propaganda and encouragement towards the local population to overthrow the government could bear fruit.

US needs to change on Iraq for talks to bear fruit: Iran

"If the United States acknowledges its past wrong policies in Iraq and decides to change those policies ... one could be optimistic about these talks and their future," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters. "The Islamic republic is interested in successful dialogue to help the Iraqi people and government within this framework," he said. Iran's envoy in Baghdad, Hassan Kazemi, will meet US Ambassador Ryan Crocker on Monday in the highest-level official bilateral talks between the two sides since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The people of FATA are resisting the Islamists in whatever way possible. For example, some brave people of Bajaur agency are defying their 'ban' on shaving men's beards, according to a report in this newspaper. Seemingly, the Islamists in Tank (a settled district) are threatening the local businessmen to stop the sale and purchase of women's clothes. The business is still going on despite the state's inability to extend any protection to the buyers and sellers of women's clothes in the area. In Dara Adam Khel, girl-schools have been attacked. Many brave parents of the area continue to send their daughters to schools. It is utterly shameful that instead of providing security to girls' schools in Dara Adam Khel, the state of Pakistan's appointed administrator for the area, the political agent, has reportedly asked the principals to make all girls wear a tent-like all-encompassing burqa. This is what the militants in the area had demanded. One can point out hundreds of small yet important examples of how people have been resisting the Islamic militants among them in the face of state's failure to protect them. There are also hundreds of examples to show that the writ of the state has perished in the face of demands by armed Islamists. After all, why is the state is not dealing with them according to the law of the land? Cynics in Pakistan have a point when they refer to some kind of mullah-military alliance at the state level in Pakistan.
