My doctor doesn't think I'm going to die today

Daily Kos - By JohnnyRook - Mar. 27 (Opinion) - news can depress. At times it depresses me but, more than anything else, it has filled my life with meaning. I have a mission. Before I die, I want to have some sense that this beautiful planet that has provided the context for my life, will have some chance of enduring. I want to die with hope, believing that my teenage son and his children and your children and their children will live in a world that is reasonably hospitable to human beings. I don't know how that can happen if people will not face the reality of what is taking place in the world. So, I continue to sound the alarm, even though I know that most of what I write is discounted as alarmist or simply ignored as too uncomfortable to deal with.

OWS is going to start buying distressed debt (medical bills, student loans, etc.) in order to forgive it. As a test run, we spent $500, which bought $14,000 of distressed debt. We then ERASED THAT DEBT.

What's to stop the King County GOP, once they have these ballots in hand, from comparing the names and addresses to a Democratic mailing list (available to anyone for a relatively small sum) and separating out anyone on the list, or turning them in after the deadline? Or shredding large numbers of ballots from traditionally heavy Democratic neighborhoods?

It's a well-researched piece, with much of it depressingly familiar to many progressives who followed the tin-foil-hat-tainted theories of the 2004 election. It reviews the recent history some of us know: the ESS&S / Diebold coziness, Bev Harris and hackable GEMS system, the Help America Vote Act Trojan horse, Chuck Hegal, Max Cleland, the exit poll disparities in Ohio and elsewhere in 2004 that all exhibited a "red shift" to the Right. The article then brings things up to date.

In every state that has been polled the last three days, Obama is up universally. Every. Single. State. He is over 50 percent at Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin. Indeed, this is the last time I'm including Michigan in this list. It joins Missouri, New Mexico and Pennsylvania as states off the map. Not that it ever was truly in play, but the data has now caught up to the reality. Look at North Carolina! The president is coming on strong. In fact, Obama now leads in the state in the RCP and Pollster composites. Those polling aggregators roll their older polling off more quickly off their averages, because the latest batch of Carolina polling is all bad news for Team Red. Michele Bachmann announced Monday in St. Michael, MN that she's hoping to team up with Rep. Keith Ellison on Medicaid reform. [...] "Minnesota is the poster child for Medicaid fraud. If we're going to have a system, we need a system that works for the poor. Right now, it's not working. I've been in communication with Rep. Daily Kos - By Laura Clawson - Jul. 28 (Opinion) - Elvia Bahena This week, Elvia Bahena , who worked at the Indianapolis Hyatt through a contractor, was fired for being a terrible, terrible worker, something that coincidentally Hyatt and the contractor decided to take action on right after she testified in front of the city council about blacklisting in the hotel industry. Actually, the contractor denies that Bahena has been fired. It's just that she's gone from working full-time at the Hyatt for the past six months to being "currently unassigned." In other words, they stopped giving her work, because of problems that were bad enough to be documented, supposedly, but for which Bahena says she had never been disciplined, and which it seems just coincidentally came to a head right after her city council testimony. Hyatt workers aren't alone, of course. It's a common feature of any attempt by workers to organize for better wages and working conditions that the most vocal activists get fired. He answered no questions directly. He continued to repeat things that are currently being debunked. He refused any further disclosure to clear things up. He didn't either deflect the matter or settle it satisfactorily. Furthermore, HE LOOKED WEAK , by repeatedly begging his opponent to stop attacking him. This is a disaster for Republicans. The usual things that fix problems like this, the ole Clinton sit-down interview ... the Bush "so what?" swagger ... the Obama "teachable moment" speech ... Mitt Romney deployed none of that. What this reveals is a candidate who is simply unprepared to operate at a presidential level in the modern era. CBO: Under Obama Americans Have Paid Lowest Taxes in 30 Years

Daily Kos - By Dartagnan - Jul. 10 (Opinion) - Americans paid the lowest tax rates in 30 years to the federal government in 2009, due in part to tax cuts sought by President Obama to combat the Great Recession, congressional budget analysts said Tuesday. The article notes that while part of the drop in tax rates was due to decreased income for some (and even the most rabid Tea Partiers would have to do backwards somersaults to attribute this to Obama as of 2009), the predominant reasons for the drop were the tax credits such as the "Making Work Pay' program which the Democrats passed during their majority as part of the fiscal stimulus.

Patty Murray (Kevin Lamarque/Reuters) You know sequestration; that's the mechanism that Congress and the White House agreed to last year when they negotiated the Budget Control Act to keep Republicans from wrecking the global economy by refusing to raise the nation's debt ceiling. The sequestration means automatic cuts to both the Pentagon and domestic spending if Congress doesn't come up with some other solution by the end of the year. From the get-go, Republicans have been screeching about the Pentagon cuts, and have forwarded ideas like slashing funding for food stamps for the next decade in order to keep a few precious weapons systems around. McCain's amendment, of course, is focused on defense spending. He wants to direct the Office of Management and Budget to do an audit of the defense cuts. Segregation didn't end (well, de facto segregation still hasn't) because the courts suddenly decided out of the kindness of their hearts that enough was enough. They were forced to. We were forced to confront our ugly, dark, vile practices, and we didn't like what we saw in the mirror, a mirror that had been held up over and over, smashed over and over, it's shards driven into the hearts of the brave women and men who defied injustice over and over and over until those brave people won.

VanderSloot is a billionaire whose deep pockets have funded no small number of Idaho's political figures. As Greenwald details, his business practices have drawn plenty of unwanted attention, as has his involvement in numerous far-right causes, particularly his anti-gay activism, including running a billboard campaign against Idaho Public Television for running a documentary about teachers talking about lesbian and gay issues in age-appropriate ways. His wife, Belinda, donated $100,000 to California's Prop 8 campaign.
