Facebook unveils new messaging system

Computerworld - By Sharon Gaudin - Nov. 15 (News Report) - Swatting down recent rumors that it's launching an e-mail killer, Facebook today unveiled a new messaging system that will envelope e-mail, instant messages, Facebook messages and SMS. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched what he calls a "modern messaging system" to handle the convergence of different kinds of messages and bring them together under one social umbrella. The system, which has been in the works for about 15 months, is designed to save all messages, meaning users will have a history of their communications.

Iran confirms massive Stuxnet infection of industrial systems

Weiss - Jul. 07 (Interview) - I do think one of the risks of fully electronic voting is that a small mistake can be magnified in scale all over the place because the touch-screen e-voting machines are all the same, they're all electronic, they all require power, and they all use computer code and a particular set of circumstances that could cause something bad to happen everywhere. I don't usually think it's likely to happen, and in this case, it doesn't appear to have happened. But the concerns of security and auditability are not necessarily things that would leave any incriminating evidence of a potential problem.

Weiss - Nov. 13 (News Analysis) - Before and during last week's midterm elections, reports emerged that "vote flipping" -- where a voter selects a candidate using e-voting hardware and the machine counts the vote for another candidate -- had occurred in some states. For example, voters in both Broward and nearby Miami-Dade County in Florida had complained of vote flipping during early voting, though local elections officials assured the public that no votes were changed.
