Independent Media Goes Web 2.0

COA News - Mar. 04 (News Analysis) - Non-profit and small for-profit public service oriented media organizations (Independent Media) are, after a delayed response, quickly developing web 2.0 or "social web" tools. In the past many of these organizations have stuck to the old web 1.0 way of simply providing a website with basic capabilities. After seeing the power of media tools like digg.com, and communities like Myspace and youtube, public service media enterprises are jumping head first into the web 2.0 game. Buzz Flash, TreeHugger, and Huffington Post have launched digg.com type portals where citizens can submit and vote on current news headlines. BuzzFlash has BUZZ, TreeHugger has Hugg, and Huffington Post has HuffIt. A new non-profit organization called NewTrust just launched a service where citizens can submit and rate news stories and sources based on their level or objectivity. GNN has offered members the ability to submit/vote on both headlines and personal blogs for some time, and just launched an online chat function. GNN also plans to offer video uploading/voting in the near future.

WSF 2007: Critical Reflections, Unknown Directions.

COA News - By Dan Morrison - Jan. 26 (Special Report) - he World Social Forum (WSF) for the first time took place in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, marking new directions and challenges for the seven year old process. Nairobi's Moi International Sports Complex, located in the district of Kasarani, emerged as the WSF's epicenter. Although the football stadium became transformed into a unique world of constructive dialogues, mass action planning, and experience sharing between January 21 and 24, 2007, it also became shaped by rampant confusion, disorganization, noticeable cynicism, and new and old forms of social exclusion which now revamp the WSF's trajectory...

COA News - By Matt Thompson - Dec. 18 (Advocacy) - With the 109th Congress now over, the telecom bill HR 5252 has now been defeated. We now have a historic opportunity to take Internet Freedom to the next level in the new Congress. However, the companies are launching a counter attack in the New Year, taking the fight state by state instead. We need to raise the alarm now to protect neutrality nation-wide, and to campaign for a faster, more open and accessible Internet in 2007.

IBM and the Holocaust

COA News - By GNN.tv - Dec. 08 (Special Report) - Short video based on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated international bestseller book "IBM and the Holocaust" by Edwin Black. The book, which documents IBM's direct links to Hilter and his so-called 'Final Solution' by providing the Third Reich with census machines and punch card technology, caused IBM to issue a formal statement claiming that the Nazis controlled the operations of IBM Germany during the war.
