I don't fully understand the working of the "derivatives" and "credit swaps" that we have heard so much about in recent months. I'm not alone. But I'm learning. I gather that these are ingenious computer-driven trading schemes in which good money can be earned from bad debt, and Wall Street's Masters of the Universe pocket untold millions at the same time they bankrupt their investors and their own companies.

But it's been the message sounded over and over by the White House. Top Obama adviser David Axelrod said on one of the Sunday news shows, "He walked in the door, we had the worst economy since the Great Depression." In San Francisco, Obama talked of being "busy with our mop." White House heavy hitter Rahm Emanuel used the worst-economy-since-the-Depression line on a public TV news show.

Aides say she will visit other federal cabinet level agencies in the coming weeks. She was joined on stage by Education Secretary, Arne Duncan--she called him committed, hard working, passionate and fair. Duncan said that the Obama effect was going to be huge and that kids would say "I want to be smart like the President, I want to be smart like the first lady."

Blagojevich this afternoon said he's appointing Roland Burris to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat. "The people of Illinois are entitled to have two U.S. Senators," said Blagojevich, whose arrest on corruption charges earlier this month places Burris' appointment under a cloud. "If I don't make this appointment then the people of Illinois will be deprived."

Chicago Sun Times - By Roger Ebert - Sep. 12 (Opinion) - I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin's appeal. She's the "American Idol" candidate. Consider. What defines an "American Idol" finalist? They're good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they're darned near the real thing. There's a reason "American Idol" gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! My problem is, I don't want to be up there. I don't want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq. Someone who doesn't repeat bald- faced lies about earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere. Someone who doesn't appoint Alaskan politicians to "study" global warming, because, hello! It has been studied. The returns are convincing enough that John McCain and Barack Obama are darned near in agreement.

Chicago Sun Times - By Scott Jacobs - Jul. 08 (Review) - In Novak's account, it was all in a day's work: A long-scheduled interview with State Department official Richard Armitage yields up a tasty tidbit he lodges in his memory. A call to his old friend Karl Rove confirms it. And a third-source public relations specialist at the CIA does not deny it (or ask him to withhold the information). It's noteworthy that when he did publish the item, Novak buried it in the sixth paragraph. This has always been my problem reading his column, and carries over into reading his book. There is so much inside the beltway jockeying that goes on in Novak's choice of column items, it is often hard to see their relevance.

Now, their gang graffiti is showing up 6,400 miles away in one of the world's most dangerous neighborhoods -- Iraq. Armored vehicles, concrete barricades and bathroom walls all have served as canvasses for their spray-painted gang art. At Camp Cedar II, about 185 miles southeast of Baghdad, a guard shack was recently defaced with "GDN" for Gangster Disciple Nation, along with the gang's six-pointed star and the word "Chitown," a soldier who photographed it said.
