But that's exactly why the press should be very careful about joining the GOP chorus.... Throw in the race-baiting component, and the narcissism/ egotism/ arrogance trope could end up making the press's shameful slander of Al Gore in 2000 look, in retrospect, like Pulitzer bait.

If he spends that cash on organization, registration, and get-out-the-vote efforts, he will absolutely get his money's worth. But if he spends a major portion of it on television advertising, he will only be doing John McCain a favor.

Military veterans protesting the war are arrested in Boston and charged with disturbing the peace. An anti-abortion-rights activist in Maine borrows sex-education books from public libraries and refuses to return them. A legislative leader in Rhode Island -- the head of John McCain's presidential campaign in that state -- compares anonymous critics to "terrorists," and helps kill a proposal aimed at guaranteeing their First Amendment rights.

They know that politicians will say pretty much anything to get elected, and they also know that no one can foresee the issues a president will have to confront. So, they focus on what some critics might call "small issues" but others might define as the key issue of "character," since in the end, that's what really counts.
