What drove them into the streets, for four nights straight, to burn buses and shatter windows? Earlier Tuesday, the BBC interviewed Darcus Howe, a 68-year-old radical West Indian writer and journalist from Brixton, where some of the most violent disturbances took place over the last couple of days. Faced with a stern and flummoxed interviewer, Howe offered a rare, unvarnished glimpse into the mind of the young people in the streets this week, describing the regular mistreatment exacted upon his sons and grandsons by the police. "Our political leaders have no idea, the police have no idea," Howe said, of the level of frustration and discontent among the youth in England.

'Monster' drives cosmic beacon

Japan nuclear plant: 'Crisis over in nine months'

BBC News - By Roland Buerk - Apr. 17 (News Report) - The operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has said it expects to bring the crisis under control by the end of the year. Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) aims to reduce radiation leaks in three months and to cool the reactors within nine months. The utility said it also plans to cover the reactor building, which was hit by a huge quake and tsunami on 11 March. Nearly 14,000 people died and another 14,000 are still unaccounted for. Tepco unveiled its roadmap as Hillary Clinton briefly visited Tokyo to pledge America's "steadfast support" for Japan's reconstruction.

Nuclear radiation at very high levels is dangerous, but the scale of concern that it evokes is misplaced. Nuclear technology cures countless cancer patients every day - and a radiation dose given for radiotherapy in hospital is no different in principle to a similar dose received in the environment. What of Three Mile Island? There were no known deaths there.

BBC News - Feb. 13 (News Report) - About 2,000 demonstrators have clashed with police in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on the third day of anti-government protests. Violence broke out as demonstrators marched through the city, demanding political reform and the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Mr Saleh, in power since 1978, has already pledged to step down in 2013, but has previously promised to quit. Yemen's protests have gathered momentum with the success of Egypt's revolution. "A Yemeni revolution after the Egyptian revolution," chanted demonstrators as they tried to march to the presidential palace in Sanaa on Sunday. Witnesses said several people were hurt as police armed with batons clashed with stone-throwing protesters. At least 10 people were arrested, said reports.

Burma releases pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi

BBC News - Nov. 13 (News) - The Burmese military authorities have released the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, from house arrest. Appearing outside her home in Rangoon, Ms Suu Kyi told thousands of jubilant supporters they had to "work in unison" to achieve their goals. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been detained for 15 of the past 21 years. It is not yet clear if any conditions have been placed on her release. US President Barack Obama welcomed her release as "long overdue". UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Ms Suu Kyi was an "inspiration", and called on Burma to free all its remaining political prisoners. Ms Suu Kyi, 65, was freed after her latest period of house arrest expired and was not renewed by the military government. Her release comes six days after the political party supported by the military won the country's first election in 20 years. The ballot was widely condemned as a sham.
