Arizona Republic - By Ryan Randazzo - Jun. 04 (News) - President Barack Obama's administration this year scrapped long-standing plans to develop a permanent nuclear-waste repository under Yucca Mountain in Nevada, so power plants like Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station are left to store their waste on site...

"I think it's a big problem," McCain said when asked about the cut funding for Yucca Mountain during a campaign stop at Palo Verde....

Meanwhile, utility customers still are paying to store waste on site at the nation's 104 nuclear reactors, including Palo Verde.

Utility industry groups have sued to stop the payments that companies like APS and SRP make to the fund because there is no plan to deal with the waste.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Arizona Republic - By Gregory Wyman - May. 03 (Opinion) - Arizona's public education system needs some reforms. This isn't a radical idea, but a near-consensus. Proposed reforms need to be based on an accurate understanding of how the current system works. They need to contain realistic solutions, not slogans.

Under the banner of ImagineArizona, former Arizona education officials are promoting a package of changes (detailed in an April 14 op-ed piece, "Reforms are needed to improve education in Arizona") that fails to hit those targets.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Arizona Republic - By Matthew C. Whitaker - Feb. 24 (Opinion) - With the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States, those who already viewed Black History Month as outdated and worthy of extinction have seized this period of racial optimism to call for the elimination of the 28-day commemoration.

Leading columnists from major newspapers in recent weeks have been pressing for the end of Black History Month, which is the legacy of historian Carter G. Woodson, who created Negro History Week in 1926.

Cynthia Tucker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, writes that "the commemoration is a damaging form of apartheid" and that "the nation of Tiger Woods, Oprah and Barack Obama no longer needs a Black History Month."
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
