American Spectator - By Philip Klein - Nov. 03 (Opinion) - Republicans were defeated in 2006 and 2008 because Americans felt that the country was being mismanaged. And in 2010, Democrats had to explain their vote for an $862 billion economic stimulus package to the American people at a time of near double-digit unemployment. The lesson any party should take from recent election cycles is that voters will brutally punish poor governance, regardless of ideology.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

America's Ruling Class -- And the Perils of Revolution

American Spectator - By Angelo M. Codevilla - Jul. 17 (Opinion) - Never has there been so little diversity within America's upper crust. Always, in America as elsewhere, some people have been wealthier and more powerful than others. But until our own time America's upper crust was a mixture of people who had gained prominence in a variety of ways, who drew their money and status from different sources and were not predictably of one mind on any given matter. The Boston Brahmins, the New York financiers, the land barons of California, Texas, and Florida, the industrialists of Pittsburgh, the Southern aristocracy, and the hardscrabble politicians who made it big in Chicago or Memphis had little contact with one another. Few had much contact with government, and "bureaucrat" was a dirty word for all. So was "social engineering." Nor had the schools and universities that formed yesterday's upper crust imposed a single orthodoxy about the origins of man, about American history, and about how America should be governed. All that has changed.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Spectator - By John C. Wohlstetter - Mar. 26 (Opinion) - ... two recent decisions starkly diverge from the war focus of the Bush years. By instantly tossing the Christmas Flight 253 bomber into the criminal justice system, before ascertaining whether he acted alone or in concert with Islamist groups, the opportunity to probe the bomber's knowledge of Yemeni terrorist connections was cut off by the Miranda warnings and intervention of defense counsel. The defendant's testimony is now only be obtainable via a plea agreement, in which event the Obama administration will have sacrificed full punishment for a would-be mass murderer, to gain intelligence it could have gained by pursuing trial in a military tribunal, where pre-trial interrogation can be much more thorough.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Spectator - By Bill Croke - Feb. 18 (Opinion) - This past January 6, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter surprised the Centennial State and national Democrats by announcing that he wouldn't run for re-election in November. Only a one-term governor, the Democrat's popularity was dropping thanks to his role in new state energy policy regulations blamed for a decline in drilling and the subsequent loss of jobs adding to Colorado's overall anemic economy. Ritter also alienated organized labor in Colorado by vetoing a bill designed to more easily unionize workers. And he angered his fellow state Democrats by appointing Michael Bennett to Ken Salazar's Senate seat when the latter was tapped by President Obama to be Secretary of the Interior.
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Nuclear Renaissance Begins

American Spectator - By William Tucker - Sep. 28 (Opinion) - Nuclear power has gone through an extraordinary renaissance over the past decade after the abyss of Three Mile Island. In 1997 the Clinton Administration's Department of Energy zeroed out nuclear research for the first time since World War II. The Federal Energy Information Administration confidently predicted that existing plants would phase out over the next three decades. That same year, however, Entergy Corp. of Jackson, Mississippi, became the first merchant energy company to purchase one of the supposed white elephants from a utility company. Exelon, spun out of Commonwealth Edison of Chicago, and several merchant companies from the South (Dominion Resources, Constellation Energy, Southern, and Florida Power and Light) followed suit. Soon these new owners -- heavily staffed with veterans from the nuclear Navy -- were revitalizing the industry.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.5 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Spectator - By Patrick O'Hannigan - Aug. 22 (Opinion) - TRUE TO THE SAYING that you should never pick a fight with someone who "buys ink by the barrel," journalists often downplay their own image problem to point fingers at other damaged professionals. Priests and teachers take it on the chin, but politicians, personal injury lawyers, and car dealers have been journalistic adversaries for so long that many reporters would rather dance with them than spar with them.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Spectator - By Philip Klein - Aug. 14 (Special Report) - Many conservatives have a difficult time believing that at a critical time in the nation's history, in the midst of the War on Terror, the country would choose a novice like Barack Obama to serve as their commander in chief. For years, the right has been gearing up for another epic confrontation with the Clinton machine, and it's hard to imagine Hillary would allow a political neophyte to squash her White House ambitions.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
