American Prospect - By Pema Levy - Jan. 11 (Opinion) - Since Jared Loughner's attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords, Republicans have united behind the idea that this was an isolated act by a crazy person. They argue that because Loughner was mentally unstable, their political rhetoric, often filled with guns and other violent intimations, is not to blame. Loughner probably was a mentally ill person with no coherent political agenda, but that's actually a good indictment of the conservative policy failures that allowed the shooting to take place.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

In these retellings of Obama's personal history, the president's life is an epic, Marxist, sinister version of a Joseph Campbell-style heroic journey, with its hero ultimately falling, like Anakin Skywalker, to the dark side of the force.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Barring a miracle, Republicans are very likely to win the House in November, and there's a good chance they'll pick up the Senate, too. In addition to driving President Obama's agenda to the right, GOP gains virtually guarantee a scandal-ridden 112th Congress.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Adam Serwer - Aug. 20 (Opinion) - When Andrew Sullivan first wrote "Goodbye to All That," believing that the candidacy of Barack Obama could be the beginning of a "truce" in the culture war, he was largely placing the blame on the narcissism of the baby-boomers. The culture war as Sullivan was writing about it is largely over, (not to dispute the ongoing salience of abortion rights or marriage equality) but as Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin write today, a different kind of culture war has taken its place, one over what it means to be an American.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Tim Fernholz - Jul. 14 (Opinion) - A situation where it is impossible for the United States to enter into formally binding international agreements is one where the president has one hand tied behind his back anytime he seeks to engage with another country, friend or foe -- how can any president assert U.S. leadership abroad if world leaders realize that there is no way his political opponents at home will allow him or her to make a deal? While the president's unfettered authority to act destructively in foreign affairs merits a rethinking of the executive's legal authorities, the reverse situation -- the inability of the president to act constructively abroad -- is just as worrisome.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Terrorists Versus Soccer

American Prospect - By Adam Serwer - Jun. 18 (Opinion) - International soccer interferes with the extremist vision of a fundamentalist society free of secular influences in a number of ways -- most notably by cultivating a secular, national identity separate from the religious one. It showcases peaceful interaction not only between rival, even hostile nations, but between Muslims and non-Muslims, undermining the narrative of an inevitable clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. This isn't to say that soccer is necessarily a liberalizing force -- Mussolini's Italy did win the last World Cup before World War II. But the world's love for soccer offers a particularly difficult challenge for the pan-Islamist extremist ideology of groups like al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Anya Kamenetz - Apr. 21 (Special Report) - The higher-education system has a lot in common with another great challenge our country is confronting: health care. Colleges, like hospitals, have little incentive to conserve resources or compete on price. They can actually gain prestige by raising tuition. They shift costs to students to make up for gaps in state funding and then hand out grant money to the applicants they want the most, not the ones who need the most help. Community colleges dedicated to serving the poorest get a fraction of the public money that goes to flagship state universities.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Tim Fernholz - Feb. 03 (Opinion) - This is Obama's opportunity to teach responsible economic policy to the American people -- heck, to teach responsible economic policy to the American Congress. No, it's not an easy lift, and it may not bear political fruit right away, but Obama's mandate is to advocate for greater progressive investment now, smarter deficit reduction in the midterm, and a health-care reform bill that would create jobs and reduce the deficit over the long term.

Instead of articulating these goals, Obama is telling Americans that a spending freeze that exempts the bloated defense budget will fix the deficit problem. And when the labor market doesn't improve and deficits remain high, it's unclear what the political benefits will be, especially with conservatives happy to attack whatever proposals the administration offers. (Republicans sat on their hands during the State of the Union when the president called for small-business tax cuts!) Without short-term results or an argument to differentiate Obama's approach from what Republicans are offering, the benefits of the administration's strategy are not apparent. The risks, however, are unambiguous.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Matthew Yglesias - Dec. 27 (News Analysis) - The basic story of the contemporary United States involves the slightly awkward combination of unmatched power and inevitable relative decline. Our economy can't grow as fast as India's or China's or Brazil's, and there's no equivalent to the EU integration process that could enhance our power and expand our reach. The only real uncertainty about relative decline concerns the extent to which those powers will be joined by other potential regional powerhouses like Nigeria, Iran, South Africa, and Indonesia, if they ever get their acts together in terms of sustained economic growth.
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Joanne Kenen - Nov. 20 (News Analysis) - Year after year, Republicans try to pass legislation that would limit medical malpractice awards. Fix the tort system, they argue, and we fix rising health-care costs. And year after year, Democrats resist placing arbitrary caps on awards to people who may have suffered from an egregious medical error. The fight plays out like a predictable old Western -- good guys versus bad guys. Depending on your politics, the villain is either the greedy doctor or the greedy trial lawyer.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 7 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
