The American Conservative - By Jack Hunter - Jan. 18 (Opinion) - Obama and Palin represent opposing versions of the same identity politics. Based primarily on personality, love, or hatred for the other, it is politics driven primarily by emotion–not logic. If you don’t believe me, try telling an Obama-loving Democrat that he is no different from a Palin-loving Republican or vice versa. Even the soundest reasoning will do little to quell the forthcoming rage.

The American Conservative - By Kara Hopkins - May. 18 (Review) - In the high summer of the Bush era, an administration official inquired about my “view from the cheap seats.” Excellent, thanks. Swaddled in ideological purity, safe above the muck of actual governance, I could spread generous disdain in all directions. “Do you think that what you do makes any difference?” the Man in the Arena asked. (Never mind that Brooks Brothers’ nattiest wasn’t exactly “marred by dust and sweat and blood” after a bruising day at the laptop.) Here my vanity got the better of my good sense. I might, ashamed to admit, have answered with an earnest ode to permanent things and the duty of dissent. There’s a chance I even quoted some decontextualized Burke on the subject of helpful antagonists. But he had a point. I snipe much and affect little—an apt definition of modern conservatism.

Once more the country is in a deep financial crisis (we don’t call them “depressions” anymore) for which Republicans have taken the blame. And again a pragmatic Democratic president, backed by majorities in both chambers of Congress, promises to spend us back to prosperity. After conceding the president virtually his every whim during the Bush years—with the occasional Harriet Miers-sized exception—conservatives have begun to rediscover the virtues of checks upon executive power.

The American Conservative - By Jacob Heilbrunn - Jan. 12 (News Analysis) - As Barack Obama prepares to take the inaugural oath, it almost seems otiose to note that his victory represents a sweeping repudiation of the neoconservative movement. Though neocons such as Randy Scheunemann formed a kind of Praetorian Guard around John McCain during his presidential campaign, their truculent approach to foreign affairs sabotaged rather than strengthened McCain’s electoral appeal. The best that Sarah Palin, a foreign-policy neocon on training wheels, could do was to offer platitudes about standing by Israel. It seems safe to say, then, that the neocon credo is ready to be put out to pasture.

How to Lose an Army

That is especially true for a "war of choice," which is to say a war we should not have fought. It is difficult to imagine that, had Spain defeated the U.S. in 1898, the Republicans would have won the election in 1900. What does the Democrats' victory mean for the war in Iraq? Regrettably, not what it should, namely an immediate American withdrawal from a hopelessly lost enterprise. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans, both of whom now want to get out, desire to go into the 2008 election as the party that "lost Iraq," which is how taking the lead for withdrawal could be painted.
