I'm happy to hear that all of our cancer research and awareness is paying off and our survival rate is going up. This article touches on the social determinant of generation saying that cancer usually occurs in people 65 years and older. I think in order to push this article more upstream they need to describe the procedures they used to improve their treatment methods. In addition, they should explain what practices they used to detect cancer in patients so early. Overall, I ... More »

This article is about the effects of second hand smoking on an unborn baby. It does not go upstream because it doesn't talk about any social determinants or procedures that effect secondhand smoking on unborn babies. It is difficult to make a policy for something like this because it is personal behavior that determines whether or not the fetus will be exposed to smoke. Also, those that are smoking around the baby shouldn't have to stop smoking when they are not the ones who are ... More »

This article does not really go upstream. I feel like the article is made up of a lot of "so what" because there are a lot of statistics. The article talks mainly about what can result from teens having eating disorders. In order to push this article upstream they need to talk about a policy or procedure that can be implemented to lower the prevalence of eating disorders in teens. For example they could explain how implementing a policy that assures magazine models are above a ... More »

I am not surprised that this an issue however I did not think the statistics were as high as these are. The frame of responsibility in this article is personal and societal. It is the parents responsibility to make sure that their child is getting proper nutrients and a moderated amount of food. This is also a societal frame in that our society is giving us such easy access to horrible food and is not educating parents on the topic of healthy eating in regards to babies. The frame ... This article shapes ideas regarding obesity specifically in infants. It gives the idea that parents are not educated on how to properly feed their children. Mothers are also not educated on how to eat nutritiously while pregnant. The article shapes our ideas on community-based ... More »

The major fault lines present in this article include geography and class. Geography is a huge fault line because people want surrogates from India due to the healthier lifestyle in that country. For example, they note in India women are less likely to be exposed to drugs, alcohol, and smoking. In addition, class comes up in this article because women are also using surrogates in India due to the cheaper cost. In the article it says that surrogacy will cost between one and two ... More »

I am appalled after reading this article. I can't believe Dr. Gosnell got away with this for so long. The frame of responsibility is personal towards Dr. Gosnell and institutional towards the government. Dr. Gosnell is responsible for the health of all the women that went to his abortion clinic. The government is responsible for the health of these women as well because they should have done something much sooner to shut this place down given all of the complaints Dr. Gosnell's ... More »

I found this article very interesting. I had never heard this theory of circumcision helping the prevention of some viruses. The science of it makes sense but this article does not fully convince me. After reading it I felt like some of the data such as, 27.8 percent of circumcised men had HPV infections whereas 38.7 percent of uncircumcised men had HPV, was a coincidence. The parents of males hold the responsibility for healthy disease free people because the parents are usually ... More »

This article brings up an interesting side of the BP oil spill that the government and the states along the gulf are trying to hide. I definitely think there are health related effects from the oil spill that need to seriously be addressed. However, the fact that this article only uses one doctor, Dr. Soto, weakens the article. If there were multiple doctors with the same viewpoint as Dr. Soto, this article would be more convincing. BP bears the burden of responsibility for lack of ... More »
