Government deficits have been a hot topic lately, so any context or nuance that can enlighten that discussion should be greatly appreciated. This article is a decent start, using the private prison industry as a case study to question the oft-accepted premise that private enterprise is always more effective than government.
However, there are a few major holes in the article's portrayal of private corrections corporations and their role in state detention policy. Given that the bulk of the data used in this article comes from Arizona, I am surprised and disappointed that the author failed to mention the massive investment that private prison companies made last year in lobbying for the state's controversial anti-immigrant legislation.

Chilling account of NYT reporters' days as prisoners in Libya. Very well-written.

Good treatment of emotionally charged issues regarding racial tension & law enforcement in Miami, though it left me wanting more, as though something is missing & I can't quite put my finger on it.

Disappointing. There is important information in this article, but much of it is buried at the end with no clue to its presence in either the headline or the early paragraphs. The article really covers two separate immigration-related issues: the first, Napalitano's UTEP speech taking issue with GOP criticism of her border policies, gets the headline and leads the article, serves as the attention grabber.
Preston shifts gears halfway through, however, to discuss a new independent study that uncovers major problems in the enforcement of 287(g), a program through which federal and local law enforcement agencies collaborate on immigration enforcement. This information is incredibly important for an informed national dialogue on ... More »

Wasn't quite sure how to classify this story. For those of you w/ journalism experience, does a first-person account like this fall under the same category of "news" as a more traditional, dispassionate newspaper article would, or is there a more specific way to describe it? Related side-note: for posting & editing purposes, what is the difference between "news" and "news report"?
