The article touches can be related to our class discussions on the importance of reporting the truth. The article examines the potential repercussions of large news sources giving false information to the public. These news sources have influence upon our economy, race relations, and every day choices we make in our lives. When the public is given incorrect information catastrophic events have the potential to occur. We have discussed in class the responsibility reporters and news rooms have to the public to report the truth. It is apart of the Code of Ethics and must be taken seriously. Within my own reporting I have had to make sure to not misquote and to also not paraphrase my subject. I have been tempted to do both but I ... More »

The article begins with a statistic which engages the emotions of the reader. The article uses the Red List which is created by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a source for this statistic and other information on endangered species. This is a trusted source and gives legitimate information to the reader on the severity of diminishing species. The article begins by shocking the reader with the large amount of endangered species and the rapid rate at which more species are becoming endangered. It than discusses our role in endangerment of these animals. We are also introduced to the fact that we depend on many of these animals to continue to survive of the land the Earth provides for us. The structure of the article is clear and has a nice flow. The nut graph is at the very beginning and tells the reader who, what, and why. Limon is than quoted further explaining what it is she does for the USCRI. Linda is the only source for this article. This makes sense being that it is a profile piece. If the article were to bring in another source I would have liked to heard from someone working in the programs she designed during the Clinton administration. I enjoyed how the article showed the path Limon took in life that led her to fight for undocumented immigrants. We are first introduced to her and what she does than we are shown how she got their. This is effective grasping the readers attention and making them ask the ... More »

Some of the new values that we discussed in class can be seen within this article. The racial tensions within Martha's Vineyard are newsworthy for two main reasons: The prominence of Obama and the controversy between the Brazilian immigrants and the affluent locals. "The events and lives of particularly well known people... are given particular attention by the press." (Lanson 10) The visit of the Obama family to Marthas Vineyard prompted this news story. The president is possibly the most prominent person in America. The visit of the president to almost any small town in America would be newsworthy and prompt coverage. The visit of the Obama's was linked to the ongoing controversy between the locals of Marthas Vineyard and ... More »
