Much ado about nothing. Son's youthful indiscretion given far too much significance, and father's reaction understandable but perhaps indicative of the "power corrupts" paradigm.

Fair story demonstrating justice in Texas supports views that the Wild West "justice" system remains indefensible. A good argument for minimizing if not blacking totally the death penalty.
