Pretty easy to compare facts to hype, makes for easy journalism. I wish all writing was this easy to assay.

As long as the sheep will follow without question, the far right talking heads will cherry pick the facts, bend the truth, and outright lie to keep the know nothings hearing what the want to hear.

This blog post (not a news story) has no journalistic content. It is a post at a left-wing attack site, that apparently deals in hate for Republicans (a post is entitled "Sarah Palin: The Koch Brothers' Union Maid"; another "Starship Amerika"). The author is so determined to push his ideology that he does not think about what he is saying. The obvious reason why companies have moved production overseas is that corporate tax rates are so high in the U.S. compared to other countries. I'll leave it to others to take down the rest of the errors.

The U.S. military is serving the interests of corporations? In Afghanistan? In Iraq? In Libya?

Paul Keene Comment:

If the tax rate is so high why do they not pay any taxes? Simple, the starting tax rate is high but the loop holes are bigger, much bigger.

A few more citations would make this perfect.

Good story but will not change a thing. Why? because good journalism that comes from the media backwater does not toe the company line. It will never see the mainstream because the 1% own the mainstream media The top 1% control the US government so they will get to pay no taxes and use the military to protect their profits. Why are we in Afghanistan? To keep Russia from running an oil pipeline to a warm water port. Why are we in Iraq and Libya? to protect oil capitol. Why can't ... More »

Although I feel that this opinion piece is right on the money, the author stops short and fails to tie the facts into the story. This piece would be a great lead in where all the facts are laid out and tied into one neat ball.

Everyone should read Smedley Butler's book. It's a very short piece but it shows just how far back our current problems began. See the link to an online version in the links section.

This is one of the best written articles on this subject I have seen. This material can be difficult to express but the author managed to produce an extremely informative article in a short amount of space that is easy to grasp. The facts are in the article but not tied up in the usual mathematics that turn most people off. This should be required reading in all civics classes (if they still exist).

The author has taken the material and boiled it down to bone revealing what has happened to this country and the world economy due to the callousness of the uber rich throughout the world. I thought I knew a lot about the subject but the fact that the seated Senate and Congress is almost exclusively made up of the top 1% is chilling. With the wealthy making the rules for themselves there is no way for the other 99% to effect change through normal political channels. As the author ... More »

The authors failed to take into account why there is a short fall and borrowing to cover expenses at SS. By doing so they have grossly misled the reader into thinking that SS is NOT self funded. If the politicians would stop treating SS like a slush fund to give welfare to corporations, the fund would be completely solvent forever.

I am pleased to see that an MSM bastion like the NYT picked this up and ran with it. Generally, where FOX is concerned, the big boys usually sit on the side lines. The author used many sources and quotes without having to resort to "un-named sources".

I think FOX News should be forced to change its name to "FOX Tea Party Entertainment".

The author writes in a way that makes the dull facts of wealth inequality easy to understand and interesting. The author uses many cited facts and gives links to obtain more in-depth information. This is a very well written article intended for a wide range of readers.

This article exposes exactly what the rich intended when they installed Reagan into office in the 80's. By having a populist figurehead, they were able to work behind the scenes to deregulate industries and financial institutions, cut taxes for the rich and the corporations, and set policy to begin crushing the middle class. The policy's that fueled the transfer of the middle class wealth up to the richest continued through all administrations including the present one and lead ... More »

Very in depth article on the derivatives market. The writer makes it easy to see how the market is modeled to create profits. Unfortunately, it also shows how something with no value (a derivative contract) is placed between buyers and sellers to siphon off money from both parties. We as the final consumers pay the price in increased costs. It also shows how the wealthy with their control of the government protect their privileged positions by taking all the profits but passing the risks and their bailouts onto the working class.

This is not journalism, it's propaganda. It is all opinion with no effort made to cite sources or credit quotes. In addition there is no supporting evidence for any of the writer's assertions.

The writer makes many statements that are not true such as insisting that we are a welfare state or that the economy must pivot toward investment and exports to recover (how about the corporations that are sitting on piles of cash hire a few workers instead). Especially frustrating is that the reporter glosses over the fact that the commission wants to eliminate Social Security and other fully funded and solvent programs that are run with far less overhead than their privatized ... Talk about pulling a switch. Everything the writer expounds is directly related to Republicans, not Democrats. A simple search shows that it was George H Bush's grand dad that supported the Russian revolution (that eventually left Stalin in charge), and his Senator father that was censored for selling to the Nazis during war time. I can't find a single statement in the writers rant that is actually backed by fact, he has taken a fact, scribbled out republican and inserted democrat. The pigs at the trough have always been Republicans, its money and power over equality and justice. Democrats have always been the ones for social change (Lincolns GOP being the exception). A perfect example of bad reporting: no real facts are used, only faux "facts" being shopped around by the far right (that have been disproved countless times), and no experts are cited. In addition, only conjecture is used to support the future outcome.

The weekly Standard and Fred Barnes belong in the same column as Fox News. Until these publications and networks are eliminated, the public will continue to get the "1984" version of reporting. The least they could do is drop the pretense of reporting the news and just admit that they are just for entertainment purposes only.

A prime example of bad journalism, the author conveniently leaves out the "who" part of the story in order to make his point. The author also conjectures on why the money was refused instead of supplying the official Whitehouse reason. In addition, the author contrives a scenario that doesn't even exist. This isn't news, it's fiction.

It's bad enough that Fox can claim to be a fair and balanced news organization, but for a publication like the WSJ to run the article is beyond the pale.

Journalism schools and their students (and by extension, the public at large) would be well served by studying and dissecting this report.

This story should be front and center of every paper, cable news channel, and news magazine in the country. All though long, it covers exactly what went wrong and how it can be fixed. Anyone with any sense at all and not under the control of the oligarchs that got us into this mess would be able to comprehend why the deregulation, greed, and government influence by these individuals and corporations caused the economy to fall. This story is very lacking in facts. I'm surprised the author actually put in the piece about that CTL fuel produces twice the Co2 as standard gasoline. The author fails to mention what specific energy is in the CTL (hint, it's less than gasoline) or that at 350 megawatts to produce 80,000 gallons of fuel is a net loss in energy. Overall, the story is poorly researched and reported.

I seriously doubt this story was written by Alexis Madrigal. It appears to be another coal industry sponsered article thats long on glory an short on facts (like clean coal).

A reasonable story but with a few flaws, as would be expected from a right leaning corporate friendly publication. The writer states that the current (8.1%) unemployment rate is nowhere near the depression's 25% rate. Unfortunately, the writer does not or did not look into the way the rate was and is now calculated. If you calculate the rate the way it was done during the depression, then the current rate is about 20% not 8.1%. In addition, there is very little effort in the stimulus to keep workers in jobs that will be going away, most job money is for shovel ready projects and the retraining for the greener jobs of the future. And finally, there is a lot of emphasis put on how the policies of the FDR administration (that ... More »

Its a shame that its left to Comedy Central to present the truth to the American public. It just demonstrates how in control the uber rich are when our MSM presents half truths and full on lies as real news.

I am troubled that some of the quotes from Powell's book are taken out of context but overall the report is illuminating. At the same time, I feel that Powell is trying to make up for being a "good soldier" for the Bush administration for the last 8 years. I do recall that he was the lone dessenting voice in the run up to war within the administration and had to be strong armed into playing along. I do agree with him whole heartedly about Brokaw, that man has been a sheep the whole time he has been in front of the public.

I do not know what the Times Leader and the secret service are up to as I, like the rest of the world, clearly heard the statemment on the tape of the speech. Perhaps instead of calling the reporter a liar, maybe we should just send the secret service to look at and listen to CNN's tape, if indeed they even care. A well written review that gets right to the point and explains the situation in easy to understand terms. As we have seen in the past few weeks, unfettered, unregulated, free markets lead to free falling economies. I never could understand why there should be a derivatives market, bets on bets with no underlying value just seemed ludicrous to me. I would suggest that Brooksley was chastised not because Greenspan, Rubin, and Summers thought she was wrong, but that they knew that only the poor and middle class would be effected by the dreivatives market so they didn't care.

The author shows a clear use of picking only the facts (some are not facts, but assertions) that support his argument. Trickle down economics and reduced regulation do not work, as proved by the last 8 years. Suggesting that only those at the top should benefit from the bailout, as they create the jobs, is laughable at best. In addition, asking to increase immgration because they need the additional workers is an outright lie. The only reason to increase immigration is to further depress wages. The author also claims, using last quarters data, that the economy is strong and not in a recession. Unfortunately, the treasury has officially labled the US economy as already in a recession and headed for worse. As an ... More »

Claiming that online small denomination contributions are secret foreign investment in Obama is just an outright lie and manipulation of the truth. If we are going to review articles, articles should be selected on merit and not how far right or left they lean in order preach to the choir for each side. An article this far skewed should never have seen the light of day, much less reviewed for its content. In this vein I propose that we start eliminating some publishers from submission, such as Newsmax, Captains Quarters, and PETA.
