Yes. The author not only researched statistics on rising demand for hunger, but visited food banks to meet people waiting in long lines and describe their situations, as well as interviewing workers at these food banks.
This story humanizes the tragic aspects of this war. Most appalling to me was learning that besides the 900 "serious" traumatic brain injuries from this war, there are 300,000 other TBIs. I would have liked to hear more about those--how serious are they and what is the long-term prognosis for these soldiers? Does anybody really know?
I wish everyone in America could read this editorial, which is an outstanding example of truthful, hard-hitting and courageous journalistic integrity.
This is an explosive story akin to the Pentagon Papers or the infamous 15 minutes of deleted Nixon tapes. The White House press spokesperson, a Bush loyalist, admits that the President and Vice President provided him with false information, covering up the felonious outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. As Nichols so astutely notes, McClelland has fessed up to actions that the Judiciary has previously found to be impeachable offenses. I am astonished that the major TV networks have failed to cover this story at all. Kudos to the nation for having the courage to tell its readers the truth. I have never given a perfect rating to any story before, but this one is clearly deserving. I hope the rest of the media will pick up this ... More »
This story exemplifies the problem with a politicized U.S. Justice department. It's shameful for our government to be openly suppressing the right of poor people to vote. I hope this story gets wide circulation!
I would have liked to see comments from some constitutional scholars and also inclusion of groups such as Judicial Watch, a conservative organization that has spoken out against the Vice President's claims. Otherwise some readers would see this as partisan arguments, when in fact there are grave constitutional issues at stake.
This is a very biased story full of pejoratives slamming liberals. It presents material as if there is no alternative to things like drilling in Alaska. What about incentives for solar, conservative, wind energy, hybrid cars or fuel economy? It also acts as though Democrats have no new ideas, when in fact there are many very creative proposals floating around. Also many of these Democratic ideas come with plans to fund them without raising taxes, quite the opposite of what this slanted story implies. The story also fails utterly to address the high cost of funding the war or the fact that the overwhelming majority of the public agrees with Democrats that it's time to bring our troops home. Funding every imaginable Democratic ... More »

I found this a very moving - and disturbing - story and a sign of our times. This ran the very same time people were complaining about standing in lines to vote - while others waited even longer to get food.
