I feel this opinion story should have been more informative or at least had more details about the possibilities that will come out of more or less border enforcement and immigration. The writer is promoting social capital in his article, because he is saying it's time to reunite and come together. He is promoting civic engagement to make things happen for immigrants. He doesn't exactly speak of what's happening right now as far as civic engagement goes, but he is saying that is what we need to do in order to get immigrants their human rights.
In this news article, there is a clear bonding happening within the social capital. This article is about how people were deceived and thought when Obama became president that immigration issues would be more settled and that the border enforcement would not be so intensely looked upon. However, now the border control is even more strict and immigration is seemingly impossible. Civil Rights campaigners, community works, and advocacy groups came together because they all were on the same side of the matter and they were extremely against the anti-immigration law. This is social capital because it is bonding between these groups and they came together for civic engagement to let their voices be heard.
This opinion story was insightful and informative, due to the details and surplus of facts through out. The major fault line within this article is race/ethnicity, because it is about illegal immigrants and the issues on the topic. The author of this article has fault lines are class, because of where they stand in their view points towards Meg Whitman, and their age through how they perceive why Meg Whitman is doing the things she is. My fault lines as the reader are my young age in how I judge this article and Meg Whitman, my middle class standing, and my race. My race is one of my fault lines because they re speaking of Latinos in this article so I don't personally relate to this story but people I care about do. Meg Whitman, ... More »
This is a news story, and even though it is a short article, it is still factual and is 'food for thought'. It's interesting to read about how Hispanics are so divided when it actually comes to the topic of illegal immigration and how they feel it effects the United States. The fault lines that can be seen from this story are race/ethnicity and also geography. It is all about Hispanics and their conflicting views on certain effects being positive, negative, or neutral, so the race fault line is distinct. However, they also speak of how native-born Hispanics and newly arrived Hispanics have a difference in their views; newly arrived as an 85% who said immigrants as a strength, compared to 69% native-born who said immigrants as a ... "Should USICE Act Against Lou Dobbs?" This is a well written, informative, and insightful news article. It is well sourced and shows quotes in it bye Lou Dobbs himself. There is a solid background to this "news breaking story" which is helpful if you didn't know who Lou Dobbs was before or his 'standpoint' on illegal immigration. Structural Framing is used because of how it starts out by telling what the news breaking news is, and then goes on to say how they came about this information and showed his hypocritical so-called-views against illegal immigration. Very well written, detailed piece that encompasses the full story, and is clearly credible. This structural frame is the appropriate frame to use for this news piece in ... More »
I gave this a bad overall rating because even though it is an opinion piece, the writer of the story did not use any quotes or list any sources what so ever. They do not show any credibility to what they have written, and it's clearly just their own personal view point throughout the whole thing. They should have given more background to the story and more details within it. This is a personal responsibility frame, and there is a clear distinction from the other frames that aren't used because of when they say,"... Whitman should not be blamed for doing what the law requires of employers- maintaining a legal work force." Also, in the very beginning when they state,"...it's difficult to see how Rublican gubernatorial..." they are ... More »
I was drawn in by the title of this journalism entry, and the story was informative and factual. I rated this review high because it was interesting and gave details through out the whole piece. It is insightful and causes conversation to arise because it has so many different angles that it can be seen as. People would have many conflicting views I am sure, but also it is an emotional story that brings about moral discussion as well. People whom believe the U.S. granting political asylum to the Mexican journalist was the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do, they have many things to consider when taking a side. I believe these traits are important and make for good journalism.
This journalism was some what informative, but also vague. The basic story was told, but not the details of what the immigrants when through post this happening and how they made it in that company for so long illegally. The title of this story is "Oxnard businessman and his son charged with hiring illegal immigrants" and that is what the entry was about, but no further than that. I would have recommended this piece if there were more details told of the immigrants lives and what is coming out of this story happening. The vagueness made it relatively uninteresting, and it has the potential to be more informative.
