A mild opinion piece containing some useful information.

It was funny this piece should mention "foul language" - seems I recall VP Cheney telling a senator, on the senate floor, to do something anatomically impossible with himself--after being questioned about Haliburton ties. pots and kettles

A good point made. Disclosures help keep our government transparent-- More on the Palin Clothinggate seems to be forthcoming from Newsweek.

This isn't journalism, it's a partisan trying to still be relevant. ("We lock and load our ideological ammunition. We fight.") Right. A very poor choice of words.

America saw through the fear mongering and the hate speak, and they know now that 'fiscal conservative' belongs on the shelf next to 'separate but equal' -- (perhaps I should have said belongs in the dust bin ). A fantasy that has been exposed.

I am glad to see the other reviewers of this piece saw through the saccarine BS that this article tried to pass off. Sarah has been groomed in the Republican-making machine here for years; as director of our own 'Uncle' Ted's 527 prior to election to mayorship of Wasilla. She was elected govenor because former gov. Frank Murkowski was so solidly hated here, all you had to be was NOT Frank. Check out the Mudflat's delightful blog for an insider's view. http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/what-is-mccain-thinking-one-alaskans-perspective/ I especially had a bout of gout over the "knows her way around a fishing boat" line......(breathe deep...) OK, I sit here right at this moment typing on my lap top at the galley table of my ... More »

Droplets of wisdom from Karl Rove? At first blush this missive seems reasonable, if you forget who is doing the writing. Rove only is trying to add credibility to the manic right wing spin-tone of the day. He sees a potential weakness and rushes to exploit and expand the idea of it by appearing helpful. I did get a cynics chuckle out of adviso number 3- work across party lines---was that advice Karl Rove gave to Bush? What? Did Bush just ignore him on that one? Maybe Karl just thought of that one- now that Repubs are in the minority again. And Mr. Rove puts the seed of "weary, prickly and distracted" out there, hopeful a few readers will lodge that some where between their ears-maybe if they hear it enough. I wonder if that ... More »

I congratulate TPM for keeping on the stories simmering in our little petri dish of the Arctic. Oh, Don, Don Don when will you be gone, gone, gone? I've had to listen to you far far too long.

I honestly think the one thing that surprised me here was that the AP 'broke the story'......do I see one little cahone here? two little cahones? Next thing the news reader knows there will be cahones everywhere!! Perhaps one day soon it will be raining subpoenas. Thanks to TPM for the must read.

It isn't so shocking that Bush nominated this loyal dog, but what will be truly frightening is if this guy gets confirmed. Good investigative research bringing the small important stories to the fore.

Sure, Pakistanis should retain Musharaff dispite the election results because the US asks them to; and we'll keep Bush despite the election results, because Pakistan asks us to. After all, we're all friends here.....

All that money and Exxon still tortures the citizens of Alaska by dragging out the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill litigation, it is cynical and arrogant, and protected from responcibility by this administration.

This is a great example of "weakman" journalism. Lead the reader away from the real story- Israel and it's defiance of the UN, hiding behind the power of the USA to protect it from responsibility for it's atrocities. This does a great disservice to Americans because we are in need of an open honest discussion about Israel and America's relationship to Israel in this country. This has been a taboo subject for too long. The fact that the US does not hold a seat on the Human Rights Council speaks to where our own nation stands in the community of the world.

As always, a piece of well done journalism by Frank Rich. It isn't that America doesn't get good information-it's just that Americans don't want the truth. It's a bitter pill for the ego inflated of this country.

This is a valuable commentary. These same thoughts should at least darken the doorway of the American conscience at a time we are asking 'why?' It is appropriate to do some 'US bashing', to avoid the hard questions is simply deflecting blame, and it shouldn't be all left to future historians to do the bashing. Perhaps we have met the killer, and the killer is us. ( insert terrorist if you wish) The author asks "What kind of society has America become?" I say this, it is as it always has been. It was concieved on the back of mass genocide of the native population of this land, it grew on the back of slavery, black, yellow, brown and white. It thrives by suppression of human rights around the world. Accepting the gritty, ... More »
