I'm a life-long former journalist, editor, managing editor and documentary producer, having worked in local and network news covering politics, technology, science, culture and the arts. After leaving the field of journalism I became a web designer, writer and developer working on usability and editorial content for several high-tech companies and websites in Silicon Valley and San Francisco. I've also taught journalism, video production and graphic arts at several schools and colleges. The documentary classes I've taught have resulted in student-produced work that has received critical acclaim. After working in the field of media for so long, I'm expanding my part-time work as an artist including digital work with conventional media, painting, image transfer, and printmaking. It is quality journalism, for a number of reasons. While there are those on both sides of the political fence who are generally against "government-run" news, agencies like PBS and NPR are funded in part by goverment funds, and are largely independent. In a highly charged political climate where media analysts are growingly concerned about commercial media and cable channels spending too much time covering the politics and not informing people of the actual issues, PBS in general, and the News Hour does not have to answer to commercial sponsors whose main interest has become ratings. Without commercial interruption PBS has time on their side and can delegate 9:30 to a story like this and rightly so. On any commercial channel you ... More »

I believe the commercial news media outlets, most of them on television, have lost credibility not just on this issue but in the minds of a growing percentage of United States citizens. I'm not personally familiar with New Scientist, however rather than a story or review, this is an interview with someone I completely trust - literally one of THE inventors of the internet, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. As such, Berners-Lee is to be believed and trusted when it comes to the internet and all related issues. Berners-Lee now admits the web has evolved to become more complicated than any of the original creators could have imagined and the issues that have arisen lack data and no real ways yet of thinking about how to address those issues, such as privacy and security.

Having worked on the web since the early 1990's, I have to agree with everything Sir Tim Berners-Lee says in this interview. (Well, how could I really disagree with the inventor of the internet!) Specifically, his suggestion that a whole new field of web science needs to be created to address the many issues that have arisen as the web has evolved.

Web science is already happening. People are studying the effect of the web within disciplines like social science, economics, psychology and law. Our Web Science Research ... More »

I would characterize this as an art and culture blog, and the piece is written as a review, not as objective journalism, although from my personal knowledge the facts that are used seem correct. I'm of the opinion that online journalism could enhance the area of arts and culture journalism, which beyond a few of the major dailies and weeklies, can be hard to find.

Although a self-proclaimed master of the "macabre," most people know about Burton as a director of quirky and extremely popular mainstream films, including "Batman," "Ed Wood," "Edward Scissorhands," and "The Nightmare Before Christmas." This article interested me personally as an artist and designer who didn't know that Burton, perhaps not surprisingly, has taken his unique brand of visual art from his films and created quite a side career for himself as an artist and illustrator.

Like Clint Eastwood, Burton owes a lot of his success to the French, who have championed his work even as American audiences have typically blown hot and cold over the ... More »

Written for a conventional daily newspaper, this piece was analysis and therefore to some extent subjective. That said the subjectivity compared to coverage from other news organizations is moderate and interpretation of the impact and reaction of the President's speech.

When it comes to technology journalism, Tim O'Reilly and his publishing companies have become a brand name that one can rely on. With books, magazines, web sites, databases, multimedia and other distribution sources O'Rielly education and development in the field of technology, computers and the web is a source I would rank in the top 10 online sources in this category. This is Tim O'Reilly's personal blog and the reader gets the benefit of many comments left by some heavy hitting developers using new technology to continue building out the web, so stay tuned for Web 3.0, the semantic web. See http://oreilly.com/

I learned a lot sitting at night at my computer transforming myself from a journalist and writer into a web designer, most of the time, with O'Reilly books on web design, programming, graphic arts and put things together online.

the rate of browser innovation is accelerating, with new browser releases nearly every other month. The slide below, from early in Vic’s talk, shows the progress ... More »

Written for Edutopia, George Lucas' Educational Foundation this piece has a definite point of view in support of a good case. This is an important time for rebuilding arts infrastructure through the economic recovery stimulus, and Fran Smith gives a valuable roadmap for rebuilding arts infrastructure through the economic recovery stimulus, and detailed look at the need for arts in the schools.
