This story cannot be considered good journalism because it lacks the most essential thing a story needs; sources. There is not one source listed throughout the entire thing unless the writer was hoping "police said" as one. It is not necessarily fair because it doesn't give either side the opportunity to tell their side of the story and also considered the boy to be guilty; rather than "innocent until proven guilty". Which is not right considering neither side was given the chance to speak. While I do understand the article is just basically a news brief on the event; it would be nice to get a more in-depth look at why this 14 year old would do something so awful.
This is not an example of the strongest piece of journalism because it's not even really newsworthy. The whole point of the article is who isn't running for the campaign where as a strong article could have been to cover who is running for the campaign and mention that he is not despite rumors.
This story was very factual but many of the facts were missing citations. For example, where did the author get the facts about the effects of led paint on children? Some of the figures the authors mention were also not cited. A few of the sentences were too long and were too complex than they had to be. Overall, the article showed good insight into the problems facing housing in Baltimore.
I agree that it also would have been nice to see where the facts and figures came from. This would allow anyone interested to further follow up on investigative work and be able to rewrite the article in the future.
Shortening sentences may have helped the keep the attention of ... More »
I'd say this article is an example of good journalism because it is very well sourced and balanced with its sources in that it shows an in-depth look at both perspectives. it not only addresses the issue but discusses what is currently being done to resolve it.
My only problem with this story is that the first few paragraphs do not make it clear as to what the story is going to be about. If the lede was stronger I think the story could have benefited from it.
I think this article lacked a bit more official sources to really strengthen it. I do, however, believe it was a good idea for people at the meeting to be put in the shoes of those in our government roles and try to work out just how to solve the problem. Saying something should be done is different than actually being proactive once push comes to shove.
I agree with previous comments that this article may be a bit longer than it needs to do to actually serve its purpose. However, I do believe that it is a strong article that has strong sources and a good use of quotes. I'm glad to see an article addressing that the clean up's that have occurred over the last 15 years or so have failed.
I believe that this story was not strong journalism because it lacked overall fairness, relevancy and official sources. If these were included it would have made it become a stronger article.
Absolutely. I thought the statistical data provided in this article is a perfect example of good journalism. So much of the information included in this article is relevant, I just wish I could find an updated version of it.
I believe this is good journalism because the writers clearly did their work to get information from around the United States. This shows initiative that they did the background reporting necessary to present a strong article.
The reason I chose this as one of my articles was that I wanted to take a look into what other cities are doing to address this issue. From this article I believe I now have some options that I can look into and further investigate to see if Baltimore has considered using them.
I believe this story is good journalism because it states the problem the addresses ways that people can help the issue. It is informative but not in a way that the average reader couldn't handle reading it.
I believe this article is good journalism however with the addition of quotes from official sources it could have strengthened the blog post and made it even better journalism.
I thought it was interesting to see how Beth Feingold covered the topic of zoning since part of her article is going to be what I'm covering for my beat this semester. Beth provides strong information on what zoning is and how it can help the lack of fresh food in Baltimore but she just skims the surface of the topic.

Opting out - Kweisi Mfume not running in mayor’s race, councilman says
I only see one source quoted. Where is Mfume's commentary? This article seems to be a list of the way Mfume has a record of losing positions/elections more so than how his "opting out" affects Baltimore and its voters. His decision to not run for mayor is of interest to Baltimore, but why and what not?
Cari, I think you’re right about the idea of focusing on what this has to do with Baltimore being the true story here. Why was he such a front runner in peoples minds? What were positive things that supporters felt he would bring to the table as Mayor? All of these things, plus ... More »
