I am an expert in renewable energy. I have lived with distributed solar energy systems since 1983. Much of what is reported in the media on this topic is ill-informed and factually incorrect. This is a critical error that is misinforming the public. I am the person to make INFORMED reviews on renewable energy.

This is an example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. If we choose to retain the anachronistic technology of a power grid we need to nationalize the grid. As long as it is held in the hands of a private monopoly there will be environmental devastation. Why? Because these monopolies can resist change if they don't see an immediate benefit to themselves. The distributed model of power generation where the power is generated as close to the end user as possible is a major shift in technological approach that needs to happen now. It won't happen if the monopoly power companies have anything to say about it, in spite of their ubiquitous public service announcements to the contrary. Why? Because these monopoly ... More »

This is the best I have seen in analysis of the financial melt-down.

As a student of economics and business and holding an MBA, I have to say that this article is one of the few that explains what has happened and how we have been decimated, perhaps beyond redemption.

Superb critical thinking and analysis written in a concise style and using layman's language about the essential features of true, durable prosperity.

The old ideologies are irrelevant. We need to begin with a clean piece of paper and starting with what we really want, find the path to get there.

This is more in the way of reporting than analysis but contains important information for the earth's inhabitants. The great upheaval is upon us. We need to be not only reversing our energy use paradigm, but also planning for survival in a flooded, burning, depleted world. Time to pull our heads out of the sand and face up to the mess we are in.

This seems appropriate to the topic: 2008 New Year Hopi Prophecy Wisdom from the Elder of the Hopi Nation as we cross the threshold into a cycle of our journey of awakening. "You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour. Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour. And there are things to be considered: Where are you living? What are you doing? What are your relationships? Are you in right relation? Where is your water? Know your ... More »

Puts a blinding light on the hypocrisy of the racist right wing in America. Unfortunately they have taken over the Republican Party and the conservative movement despite the fact that they are neither Republican nor conservative.

This piece is idiotic. There is no point in these candidates making answers to speculative questions about national security since they won't even know all the facts until they are elected and have full access to all intelligence and actions undertaken by the government. We already know that McCain is a knee-jerk militarist who is still reliving his outrage at having been tortured for 6 years and then having the United States withdraw from Vietnam, making all of his suffering pointless. This is why he would be a horrible President. He is psychologically unfit for duty and would likely send many of our soldiers and civilians as well to unnecessary death. Barack Obama is blessed with a clear head on these issues. His youth is ... More »

This is the kind of information that you get when the writer is not knowledgeable in the field they are writing about. They become the shill for vested interests who want to continue to fleece the public. The article completely ignores the most rational approach to renewable energy - distributed generation. This locally generated and supplied renewable energy does not require massive, endless investments in transmission lines so that centralized monopolistic utilities firms can continue to hold the market in the palm of their hand. Building-integrated solar and local wind farms directly powering industrial areas makes much more sense. Yet this option is not even mentioned in the article. No wonder the NY Times is losing money. ... More »

This is excellent journalism, because it uses diverse sources to come up with a very valuable big picture solution. This is the kind of critical thinking and analysis that is necessary to overcome the multifarious economic/energy/climate crisis that the world now faces.

This is excellent and courageous journalism. I hope that there is no revenge by the criminals in government. The United States must take this action and even further to prosecute those who have engaged in criminal conduct by the letter of the law. This must include people like Pelosi and the Democrat leadership who have been accessories to the heinous crimes against humanity and the U.S. Constitution. Unless this course is seen through, the U.S. can forget ever being anything but the laughingstock of dictators and tyrants who will sneer at the blatant hypochricy of any U.S. accusations or condemnations.

This is necessary journalism, taking up a topic that most main stream media won't touch. Its worst case scenario is a very unpleasant movement toward the kind of police state that seems to be gradually becoming a reality. All you frogs may want to consider jumping out of the water.

This is propaganda about a guy who is probably technically a traitor, having participated in the hijacking of the constitution and the lies that unsuccessfully tried to divert the public's attention. I do not gladly talk so about someone who is not able to defend themselves, but this guy, made a career of disinformation and fake journalism. The United States may never recover from the criminal acts of this cabal of hypocrites.

This is good journalism because it utilizes language to expose critical fallacies and hypochrisies of the mainstream press and its biased reporting. There are so few critical thinkers in journalism today. They are nearly all brainwashed careerists who are in league with the traitors who are bringing the nation to it knees for personal gain.

This article is surprisingly good considering the source that tends to be more big oil, big, coal, big nuclear and Bush/Cheney. Although accurate as far as it goes, it is limited by the fact that only grid tied solar energy systems are considered . As a 25 year purveyor and user of such systems, this is not the best way to go. When your energy system can put power back into the grid, you are giving control of the asset (that you paid for) to the power company, who are actually your competitor in this case. They control how large a system you can install, how much they give you for power; they can even confiscate built up surpluses after a set period of time. The alternative is using the grid only for backup and having a means ... More »

This is typical moronic journalism that one sees in this publication. There is nothing new about this news and this publication is way late jumping on the renewable energy bandwagon. They have been the primary global shill for fossil fuel vested interests for as long as I have been reading their magazine (30 years). Pathetic.

This is reporting, not journalism. Journalism should include analysis which this story does not. Speculation in commodities markets is both an effect and a cause of speculative bubbles that artificially force companies to keep churning more and more materials from the earth. The more materials they extract, the more they have to sell in order to pay for their investments in new capacity which is spurred on by speculative bubbles that raise the prices. This is a never ending feedback loop that will destroy the natural foundations of the world including the humans. Instead of investing in new capacity for extracting virgin materials these companies should be investing in technologies that reprocess discarded materials ... More »
