This was an excellent piece that ultimately showed how much Obama promotes the progress of our nation and how much he hopes to bridge social capital of different people. By trying to get the Latino’s to be involved, in the decisions being made about them, Obama is engaging the Latino community in bridging the gap between them and those born in the US. By doing this he is promoting the bridging of social capital, between races, geography, and class. His reference to the civil rights movement also showed his work of bonding two different groups of people (the Latino community and African American community) by reminding us of one of the most memorable times in history, when the public strongly engaged in improving the social ... This was a witty piece of news. As I read the article I gained a little bit more insight into the Republican Party. I feel that as this piece was about how the republicans are trying to demote the bridging aspects of social capital, I feel that the piece was trying to do just the opposite. I Believe that the piece was trying to educate the general public, and gain their support for the fight for racial equality. Although the piece was very sarcastic in tone, that gave it it’s edge to get the writers point across. That we must pay attention to the republicans, and that if they do not cooperate with the efforts to promote our social well being then we must find a way to make them. I do feel that the piece was a bit demeaning to ... More »
this was a good piece of journalism, especially because I feel the writer saw both sides of the issue well and gave examples of what both parties should do to resolve thier issues with the problem at the end of the article. I feel that even though the writer didnt play much on the race card I feel that he still would want stricter immigration laws and that that was the purpose of writing this article. To stray away from giving us the choice and trying to give many valid points of why we should vote for stricter laws.
yes this was a great piece of journalism. Very in depth and well written. Although the op-posers of immigration try their best to make their points valid, I feel that they are very harsh about the people who immigrate to the US. They expressed that they felt it was a "battle of epic proportions" and that it gave great incentives for "foreign invaders to violate out borders and laws." They are speaking as if this were a war with guns that was threatening the state, yet they are only talking about people and families. Also the states involved are southern and Midwestern states that are majority Caucasian people, who also have a history of prejudice. Which leads me to believe it is nothing but that.
For the short opinion piece that this is, I have to say, that, I like it, and would love to read or hear the whole speech that it refers to. Although this article is very short I feel that the writer got her point across to the general public. It was informative and gave enough detail about the issue, yet it also left the reader wanting to know more of what was said in the speech on immigration. The only downfall of this article to me was that there could have been more detail to support the writer’s opinion. I find that this piece was useful but somewhat vague. Overall I do suggest that you read this woman’s opinion along with the original article by Adam Serwer from the American Prospect. It was a great piece of journalism ... More »
This article would be a great piece of journalism if it went into more detail. Although the piece is relevant to the topic of immigration, it lacks the depth of a great news article. The story barely gives enough background information on the topic and the new Arizona law. It also only tells a short and hasty story of how a lawsuit was brought up challenging the law. It also did not give much background on the lawsuit and the people behind it. Overall I believe that the piece was rushed and that it is an “OK” piece of journalism but could have been much better.
a) Yes they article explained the issues well. b) Yes the article showed a great understanding of the issue at hand. c) Although the article did clarify some of my questions it left me with more. d) It is a great informative piece the I believe will make people more aware of dangers that they would had never thought about without this tragedy. e) There was no racial or cultural element to this piece.
