Howard is a member of NewsTrust's board of directors, and has been advising NewsTrust since its inception in 2005. He is the author of Smart Mobs, a widely acclaimed book and companion blog, which offer a prescient forecast of the always-on era. Howard is visiting professor at Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley, where he teaches digital journalism and participatory media. He was founding Exec. Editor of HotWired and authored or edited many best-selling books, including Virtual Reality, The Virtual Community and The Millennium Whole Earth Catalog. He's a participant-observer in the design of new technologies, a pioneer, critic and forecaster of technology's impacts.

Speaking truth to power is the essential responsibiity of the journalist, and it's no less important if it is funny. Satire, when combined with accurate reporting, can be powerful political journalism, which this is. I can't imagine any Comedy Central viewers so unsophisticated that they can't recognize that the cut-up collage of Presidential news clips was created to make a point, even to the point of distorting what the Presidents were trying to say. There is little dispute that eight US Presidents were recorded saying that they would lead the US into energy dependence. He succinctly and simply explains the business reasons and the science underlying prediction markets. I would expect as much -- he wrote the book on "The Wisdom of Crowds."

This is very one-sided and does not present the story of the attack on Rumsfield by 5 generals that the generals cited in the article are defending against. It says nothing about the issues they raised about the planning and conduct of the Iraq war.
