This article only quotes from John McCain's spokesperson and offers no perspective on how his positions on carbon emissions pan out relative to other lawmakers.

This story gives thorough background on McCain's dissembling about votes he cast against an independent commission to investigate the government's response to Hurricane Katrina. It provides ample evidence that McCain said the opposite of what he did in response to a reporter's questioning on his votes against the commission. The article does a particularly commendable job of giving background on the amendments that would have established the independent commission, noting that the vote was strict party line.

This article does a great job of going beyond reporting on a campaign appearance to find out how consistent McCain's actual actions on the Everglades are with his photo op, and it finds that his actions are not very consistent. The reporter provides good background on the value of the Everglades to the state of Florida, the positions of Florida lawmakers on the Everglades, McCain's justification for voting against Everglades restoration, and the reasons that Everglades restoration is supported. Great piece!

This article does not contribute anything beside repeating the McCain campaign: it does not offer perspective on why McCain would like a town hall format as opposed to another format and does not even elaborate on what a town hall format would look like.

This story on the subject of McCain's incorrect statements about troop levels in Iraq is well-sourced on the immediate matter of McCain's troop level comment but could provide broader context for McCain's arguments that he has foreign policy experience. Commendably, the writers challenge McCain's assertion that he did not say troops were at pre-surge levels by referencing a quote from him and theylink to reporting that contradicts McCain's statement that an Iraqi marketplace he toured was safe. This is how reporting should be done: the reporter investigates the veracity of any statements s/he quotes from an official rather than just playing two officials' opposing statements off one another. The article would benefit if it did ... More »

The article primarily quotes from General McPeak and the McCain campaign, which means it does not provide any sort of third party opinion--beside a poll--where it might be useful. However, it is commendable that the article tries to go beyond the usual narrative that Obama is inexperienced in foreign policy and therefore not qualified as a commander in chief.

The story offers only one perspective to support that McCain is bipartisan and blames others, like Barack Obama, for resisting McCain's bipartisan entreaties. In particular, the contention that Obama reversed positions on joining a bipartisan task force on ethics reform in 2006 was challenged at the time by Obama, who insists he always told McCain he wanted an ethics reform bill to go through a committee rather than a task force.

Now Barack Obama has claimed those principles as his own, promising to overcome the rancor of traditional politics and change the way Washington works. The young senator ... More »

This article should be commended for verifying that McCain did indeed misstate troop levels.

This is not good journalism, because the author quoted extensively from McCain without providing context for his appeasement charges and an explanation of what appeasement means. Furthermore, the writer did not quote at all from Obama's response and placed her reference to it at the very end of the article.

Asked if he thought that former President Jimmy Carter, who struggled with the hostage crisis, was an appeaser, Mr. McCain replied: “I don’t know if he was an appeaser or ... More »

Dobbs challenges Mccain's troop numbers claims with facts from an official source, the Congressional Research Service. He also parses the claim that reporters were being picky about McCain's verb tense, noting that it is important whether McCain specify that troops are not currently at pre-surge levels. The only objectionable bit of reporting is when Dobbs implies that Obama's misstating of a concentration camp (Auscihiwitz for Buchenwald) is equivalent to McCain's misstatement about troop levels.

Pointing to Obama’s recent misstatement about his uncle liberating Auschwitz, Scheunemann says that all candidates should be held to the “same standard.” ... More »

This is a very strong, well-sourced story, because Boehlert is able to show that McCain has been lauded for his "maverick" brand unfoundedly. A problem is that none of the links seem to be working, which brings into question whether the quotes and statements have sources. Also, Boehlert would do well to investigate instances when the press has challenged McCain's attempt to brand himself a maverick in order to balance the article.

Of course, when reporters and pundits fawn over the mighty McCain brand, almost none of them acknowledges the central role they played in building it. In fact, the press is ... More »

This story is not helpful. It posits that a tendentious issue will become the key to deciding which direction California will go for McCain, the author suggesting that McCain has as good a chance as any Republican in the past twenty years of winning the state, for no apparent reason. There is much stating of speculation as fact and no particularly original reporting here. Rather than chasing a story, the writer has created one. Too much weight is given to the words of McCain partisans, especially as Obama partisans are not quoted at all in this article to challenge the contention Mccain has a good chance in Florida.

Giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants is unpopular in California. …he retains a somewhat maverick image, and he could be popular with independents More »
