This opinion piece shows the impact social capital can have on an election. The articles gives various examples of how certain candidates won based off of the Latino vote, and the politicians stance on immigration. The article mentions Elena Duarte who exemplifies social capital by going out and encouraging others to vote for Harry Reid the Senate Majority Leader. The article shows how affective social capital can be, when manipulated in the right way, and the positive effects that come from it. It also proves that every vote does count. While some people believe that their vote doesn't count, social capital proves otherwise. One can take there beliefs and talk with others about them and spread the word for support to a certain ... This is story shows how social capital is prevalent in society today. It talks about a non-profit organization that sets up lectures with a targeted audiences of young people to come and participate in and learn about important ideas relevant to today. With a decline in community participation, especially with young people, this group shows that when you adapt to a new generations you can be successful in getting ones message out. For example the article mentions how they use twitter as a form as publicity, to spread the word of the lectures. They are smart and manipulating the internet in a good way to get more people to come out and engage in civic participation. This article shows the extent of a new way to reach out to ... More »
I would say that it is somewhat informative, but when read, feels less balanced in turn of different opinions. It framed around the law process that the Arizona law is going through in Appeals court. With that I feel like there is an age fault line where it appeals to an older crowd. It ties in with selective exposure because an older crowd was in there mid twenties or thirties when the Prop 187 was passed in California and therefore lived during another time when immigration issues where prominent. With these aspects taken into account one can conclude because of the fault line and selective exposure peoples recall of the article will be different as well. Over all this article was informative and helped me understand more ... More »
I thought this was a well balanced opinion piece. It was persuasive in the sense that she included quotes from the opposing side and then counter balanced it with her opinion, which I think is an opinion piece should be like. It has a fault line of race and geography. I believe that although it was addressing a general issue of immigration, but geographically Arizona. That plays in to the selective recall of the article. Depending on where you live and how the immigration reform affects your area one might only remember certain parts of the article. For example if you read this and didn't live in California, you might not recall the Prop 187 that was passed and have the same opinions or feelings towards it. This shows how a ... More »
I would say that this opinion piece is fair Journalism. I would say that since it is an opinion piece it is one sided, but it does have an affect on public discourse, in the sense that it is the scandal of the campaign. Although I would say it is a pseudo event, it has some valid points that I hadn't though about before, furthering not only my knowledge of the event/subject but giving me another aspect to look at Whitman's situation. This article is framed around political policy and personal issues. I think that the frame more leans towards the personal matters and sounds a little bit like a tabloid, but with some good points mixed in.
I would say that this article does show good aspects of Journalism. One can tell from just reading it that it is not biased and the author was able to step back and write about the facts without and opinionated interference. This is extremely relevant, with the Immigration law passed in Arizona and with the upcoming elections in California. Although it is not an in-depth article, it has some depth in consideration to how short it is. The writer did give a picture of what both sides of the issues are, but only quoted people who are for the Immigration reform. This stirs social discourse because like the sociology student, it brings back memories of the civil rights movement. This juxtaposition cause one to think more deeply about ... More »
I liked this article, because it was short and concise, while getting to the point. It also was informative and enabled me to learn something new, which I strive for every day.
No, the story seems to be focused on Obama's trip and the shock factor. The only source is locals who are upset about what happened and are clearly against immigration rights. It seems to be one sided and lacking in in-depth information.
Yes I believe that this is good journalism. It was clear and I easy to understand. It was able to take a long running complex issue and lay it out from when the war started to when it ended. There was depth on the subject and I would say that it was equal. They quoted both Obama and Bush in a way on complimenting each other on there difference of opinion. It had a watch dog conscience and kept society in check by being informative. It also contributed to public dialogue, leaving room for others to further the topic and express there thoughts on the subject.
The article explained the complexities of the issue extremely well. It laid everything out in an understandable way but still keeping the importance and not making any short cuts when explaining the story. It was in depth, and showed a clear timeline between our past Presidents and current Presidents beliefs and how they differed. It was also enabled me to understand the situation in a clear cut way. It clarified questions for me such as if they completely just moving all troops out ... More »
Overall I thought that it was good journalism. It had facts and although favored one side it did show both sides. There were sources which helped the credibility of the article.
I thought this article was able to explain the complexities of the Republicans stance on the subject, but could have been more equal when talking about the Democrats opinion. However it was informative. They went in depth on the issue my gathering and referencing different sources, first giving Brent Wilkes’ opinion then showing that of the DHS opinion. I was a little confused at the end of the article needing more clarification. The article is extremely relevant to today with not ... More »
The article didn’t explain the complexities of the issues of global warming, it was rather informative in the sense that it told one what other Americans thought on the subject of who or what caused Global Warming. The article didn’t really go in depth into the issue. The little depth that it did go into was the regression of the polls of American people. It showed how Americans cared less for the effect of climate change and that they viewed it as rather not that big of a deal ... More »

Personally, I feel that this does show the hypocritical aspects of Whitman's campaign and her so called beliefs. It does show that there is a difference in a personal matter vs. a state matter on how ones beliefs seem to differ based on the situation.
