This is my favorite article so far and I really found it helpful, but also really connected to the class .This relates to my piece and this class because even at the first Muslim event I attended, they were discussing what it means to be an American Muslim. From this class I am quickly learning that identity is important to any culture. I love some of the vocabulary the author used like " the malleable nature of Indian heritage". For the structure of the article, the author started out with a question and then provided context on Elizabeth Warren. Then there were interviews throughout the article that were about her, but really about the issue of how difficult it is to truly identify oneself, like the interview included with ... I could write an op-ed on how as evolving science becomes more and more usable by man, there could be a fear of what happens to it , as soon as it becomes a mainstream commodity. Yes, Nuclear energy has been around for years, in fact my Dad's first job was selling Nuclear energy, but the field itself has changed even since then. For instance, let me talk about the poultry business, once man learned that they could factory farm, and mass produce chickens so millions could eat chickens at a cheap price, look at what happened to the working standards of the workers, to the lives of the chickens, and even the industry itself. Based off of this article it looks like Nuclear energy is going for the same thing, accessible to way more ... More »
Knowing some people personally who suffer from depression, I'm not sure if I liked this article. Yes I understand that depression is a serious issue, but what is not so important is diagnosis, but rather treatment, which a lot of it is done through dialectical therapy. I could write an op-ed about what this might do for future treatments for depression in the future, or the new advancements that can occur when medical and psychiatric science is combined. Although I could write an op-ed about the potential advancements in medicine, I could also write a paper about the controversy this could cause. First of all, a lot of people can have the genetic susceptibility of depression, say it runs in their family, but then sometimes they ... More »

'White Hispanic' In Crosshairs As Conservative Commentators Challenge Media's Description Of George Zimmerman
This article applied to class in the fact that some of us who are working with purely ethnic communities are trying to figure out what their groups ethnicity has to do with their issues. However, for my group it is a bit different because the Muslim community is so ethnic and full of people from so many cultures and countries and different dialects. However, for me, what unifies my group is their faith, so for me, I need to look at where their faith plays a role in some of the issues they face. I liked the article, and I was shocked to read that the phrase white Hispanic has only been used 5 times. However, what I can take from this piece to improve my papers is to think about how powerful the words I am using are.
I think this article applies to what we were talking about in class, and a lot of what I have heard from my Muslim community. Even from the first day I started reporting at the MCA, the overall feeling about me being there was excited, because they too feel that their needs to be more ethnic news. One lady that I interviewed said that if the news could cover anything on her community she would really want them to cover all the successful Muslims that are part of the MCA. This article applied to class, especially yesterday's class. When the speaker herself who had been in the journalism field for many years, herself didn't even understand how much still needed to be covered about her tribe, and when she started working with ... This was a great piece because I learned not only a lot about the ladies, but China, itself. I thought some quotes were very effective such as the one by Zhang Xiaogang, "cold emotionless, faces. "That's exactly how we all grew up" because it gave insight into the girls the article was about, but it also gave insight on China. I also thought it was effective tying the paper to Steve Jobs, because if I don't know much about them and their life, I can relate or many people have heard of Steve Jobs.
Even though this article was mainly the voice of Limón, I still found some of the quotes she said useful because they gave insight on her, and supported the paper. I liked the last line "I've never argued with anyone who thinks in stereotypes, but what I do is show them they're wrong" because it shows how she is a person all about action, but also provides advice, and why what she does, advocacy but also action is important in her field, and especially for immigrants. I thought it was effective how the author did not have too much of her own voice, and I liked the background about her profession, and what she did before the title she has now.
If I were to write an op-ed based off this article, I could write one about the importance of testing animals, not just to understand and help their own health , but to understand humans , especially since this article is about monkeys, are closest relative. Another op-ed I could write based off this article would be to discuss how studying animals in the wild versus in captivity can possibly lead to different outcomes; thus, critiquing animal testing, and the way it is done.
An opinion piece I could write on this topic could be one that not only raises the question of arsenic and the chicken industry, but also what else is happening to the chickens at these farms. What else is being put in them. Another opinion piece I could write, could raise the question of if this is a issue for government and business, or "who's mess is it to clean up"? I could also write an op-ed about the workers that would lose their job, and the implications about this legislation and whether its a good or bad thing.
I think that the title provided important information, because not only was it catchy, but it summarized perfectly what the paper was about. I wish it had talked more about the riots itself, instead of comparing today to then. I found their figures really interesting, but also convincing about how the Latino community had actually increased in numbers, while the African American community had not increased in numbers. All the important facts included, helped support the message of just how bad the economic situation is, especially for African Americans. I think some other points that helped enhance the argument was the line "At the time of the riots, South L.A. was almost 50% African American. Many with the means to leave ... More »
The context of the article was primarily about the movie Touch, and The Vietnamese Community, and the struggle of the movie making industry. It talks about how Touch, by Minh Duc Nguyen is a story that covers current issues, especially for The Vietnamese Community, as well as many struggles of other people who have immigrated. A quote in the article that was really interesting to me was “if we can’t make fun of ourselves, then who can?” The article covers the context of the movie, which is “an honest portrayal of Vietnamese families who have immigrated here. Their children are growing up in America. There is a generation gap. There is a language gap. It's hard for the children to relate to the parents. We don't know ... More »
This article is good science news because it had a lot of details instead of perceptions. The details in the middle of the article about the necropsy of the dolphins was the most scientific. It is also good science news because it has timeliness in the fact that not only does it relate to a past issue but it is relevant today as well. It has impact and potential for conflict because it scientifically shows that even though the B.P spill happened quite some time ago, its still an issue.
This story was very interesting and raises a lot of questions for the future of technology. Some possible op-ed pieces I could write related to the article would be for instance an op-ed looking at the advancements of technology throughout the last 20 years. After evaluating and researching each of them , my final piece would cover each technologies impact and overall, if it was a good or bad thing. Another op-ed could be about how technology seems to be making the things we do easier, for instance, these new glasses, essentially brings the iphone and other smart technology that much closer to are faces. Even though technology seems to be evolving, how is it evolving us? Another op-ed could be about the potential risks, ... More »
An opinion piece I could write about would be the dangers of sports and how the competitive nature of them, is what pushes athletes to put their lives at risks. I could also write an article addressing whether not just cheer leading sport regulations are fair and safe but also other sports as well. For instance, I know that horse racing is another example of a sport where both the jockey and the horse are pushed to extreme limits just to win and that recently there has been some controversy over that. All in all it looks like I could write an op-ed on how sports have evolved, and whether if that is for the better or for the worst.
Mike Wallace, not only left his impression on the American public, but also, the American World of Reporting. As the article stated, he was a “CBS reporter who became one of America’s best-known broadcast journalists as an interrogator of the famous and infamous on “60 Minutes”. Even after his retirement from his 38 year long run with 60 minutes, at the age of 88 he managed to win his 21st emmy for his interview with the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As the article stated, “Mr. Wallace created enough such moments to become a paragon of television journalism in the heyday of network news.” Clearly , Mr. Wallace left his mark on the news world and the people that followed it. This is just one of the many ... More »
This story is good science news because even though its filled with estimates, there were some numbers that truly got its point across, but also were true scientific measurments. The second sentence about the 6 degrees Celsisus increase was the most scientific and overall its message was on a scientific subject, global warming. It had prominence and surprising figures and discussed a debated subject, thus is qualifies as newsworthy as well.
